"Coin Inside" ....not a good thing!!!!

GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 17,944 ✭✭✭✭✭
Glad PCGS told me there was a "coin inside"....I could have just tossed it!!

I was shocked that this coin had PVC residue. image

There was no mention of that on the Stack's Auction.(see below link)

Thoughts and comments will be greatly welcomed.

  • Oooh. That green film does look ominous. The photo looks like a pale ghost of the coin.

Have you considered sending them a note?

Personally, I'd do it and while I was at it, I'd recommend that they have a talking to whomever buys their coins! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

That was a hefty price paid for that raw MS65 which this coin past the PVC isn't.

Bad enough buying TPG coins from auction pics but Raw your really living on the egde.

In hand, it's a really cool looking coin.

I've never seen PVC residue in my short collecting career, ergo I screwed up and learned a lesson!!!

    Description 1927 Vermont. MS-65.

A mostly white obverse with a dramatic two-toned reverse, deep red-violet on the left and vibrant lime green on the right.

Oh Yeah... I don't see it image

I was 4 for 4 buying raw coins from Stack's.

3 of the 4 graded exactly as Stack's grade.

The other was a CBH that went from AU58 to AU53....even that was a positive purchase.

    Do you have any recourseimage
Or can they tell you to stick it?

If it works for you, go for it. I just checked the auction link and saw you didn't
pay anywhere near MS65 money for the coin, so much less painful than it might
    have been.

    Here it is......

    Hello.

I won a 1927 Vermont Commemorative from your September 2008 Coin Galleries Auction. The description said, "A mostly white obverse with a dramatic two-toned reverse, deep red-violet on the left and vibrant lime green on the right."
When I had the coin in hand, I found the toning very pleasing and unusual. I then decided to have it slabbed by PCGS, as I have had good success with the few raw Stack's coins I've won.
Well, I just got the coin back in a BB, PVC Residue. Never expected that, as your graders typically mention coin problems.
I have won thousands of dollars of coins from Stack’s, but this outcome is troubling.
I know the buyer must beware, but I was not given an accurate description of the item.
I’m not a coin expert, just a coin collector…so, I have always trusted Stack’s descriptions for my motivation to buy.
I know buying raw coins can be scary, Altered Surfaces, Old Cleaning, etc. can be difficult to detect if you are not an expert.
However, PVC residue is something your grader should have mentioned in the description. From what my friends on the CU Coin forum said, the pic was misleading, and the description was inaccurate.
I would appreciate your professional advice on this matter.

    Thanking you in advance.

    Regards,

    GB

Well, if Stack's won't take it back, try soaking the coin in acetone for about a week.

Here's the reply I got this morning..........

    Dear Mr. GB,

Thank you for writing to us regarding your purchase, and apologies for the inconvenience the PVC residue might have caused you. One of the pitfalls of raw coins is that they need to be stored for auction viewing in the soft PVC holders; as you know, the PVC sometimes comes out of the holder and onto the coin, leaving residue which is most times easily removable with a solvent without damaging the surface of the coin.

If you are unhappy with the coin, please return it to my attention at the address below.

    Sincerely,
    Vicken

    I replied.......

    Thank you, Vicken.

I am returning the coin, as I do not feel comfortable dipping said coin.

    Best regards, GB

Vicken replied.......and I found this interesting............................

No problem. If you ever want to "experiment" with PVC removal, put some cheap modern silver coins in PVC flips and let them sit for months. You don't need to "dip" them, as this is a chemical process that actually removes metal from the coin's surface with an acid. What you will need is a simple solvent, available from many of the supply houses, that will remove just this greasy residue, leaving the metal intact and unharmed.

    Best,
    Vicken

GB wow Stacks is really cleaning up their act!

I called them about a month ago and spoke to one of the lovely ladies from the ANR merge as I wanted to see if I could get an auction catalog I didn't get.

Just for kicks I said 2 would be great as I like having an extra for notes, but never expected to get either.

    Two catalogs where received! image
