Guess the grade - Capped Bust Half - GRADE REVEALED!

CoinJunkieCoinJunkie Posts: 8,772 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks to all for your guesses and opinions. I recently submitted this to PCGS with my 8
"freebie" crossovers. It came back "Min Grade 40", not "Questionable Toning". I may or may
not cross it at some point. BTW, I think the coin looks very nice in hand, with good (but
not booming) luster, and the toning is definitely unusual, but I frequently go for "unusual".

I'm probably guessing low, but I will say EF-40.

I'm giving it such a low grade because the eye-appeal for this coin, IMO, is butt-ugly.
To me, these colors should not exist on a coin with this much wear. Sorry.

    XF-45

The colors don't bother me, but they don't do much for me either.

Looks like a nice XF40 to me.

    35 or 40

I also think she's a 40. Also, the color suggests AT. I have seen well circulated coins with lots of nice NT color but I am not confident this is NT.

Part of the challenge of evaluating images.....

  • << <i>All guesses and opinions welcome. Grade to be revealed in 24-48 hours.

I'm going to go against the grain...I think she's pretty, questionable toning, but pretty nonethess.

    35/40 depending on the TPG.

I don't mind the color but it does look like someone's messed with it. Might even be a BB for questionable color.

What's going on just above the 0 in "50 C"? And the hairlines across eagles wing and the nearby field?

    Great photo, BTW!

Don't know what to say about the hairlines, but that's just a mark (or planchet flaw) above
    the 0 in 50.

I'll say XF45 and would think PCGS wouldn't have a problem slabbing it.

    XF wear
The colors look a little garish in those pics.
Do the colors look a little more like this in hand?
    (sorry for the scratched plastic)

I would say the colors are just slightly more muted in hand, but there's no doubt that
mine has very unusual toning for a CBH. I figured it would polarize the board, and in
fact we've seen everything from "butt-ugly" to "stunning", so I guess it has. image

I like it in XF, but the colors are funky and suggest an old cleaning and retone.

Looks a little bit similar to this one. The OP coin the colors are too in your face to me. They don't seem to blend, and too vibrant with the amount of wear showing. All this going by the image presented.

I think the toning is not like what we are seeing in the pictures. This looks like a nice XF 40 Bustie.

Nope! No one else!! Time to share the grade!!

    (Also, please describe the luster.)
  • mozinmozin Posts: 8,755 ✭✭✭
What do you mean it came back from PCGS "Minimum grade 40"? Do you mean PCGS would not give it XF 40? That would not be a surprise for an ANACS 45 Bustie.

That's the terminology they use to indicate that they would holder it as a 40. Since I didn't
indicate a Min. Grade for the coin, they didn't cross it. Sadly, they are discontinuing the
valuable service of telling you why a coin didn't cross. image
