On a slitted slab I sit?

Hi, first time post here. I wanted to get some opinions on this slab. I received this in the mail, and am unsure what would cause a slit in the inner protection to appear with no apparant damage to the outer slab. Any thoughts? (this is a PCGS slab)

The slab itself is actually not damaged. The insert is supposed to be seamless but in the pictured slab's case the seam is visible. The coin and slab are going to be fine.

It might be damage from excessive heat at some point.

    First of all ... Welcome!

The fine folks at PCGS will reholder the coin for a nominal fee - and will likely do so in this case gratis if you call Customer Service first and let them know what's going on. You'll be out the shipping cost, though.

I agree. It spent a little too long in the photo setup, lights beating down on it. Or maybe in a hot car.

I agree with Tom, I am thinking heat at some time. Wouldn't necessarily show on the slab (harder plastic) but similar type of damage on the softer insert.

Yep. I microwaved a PCGS slab once (don't ask) and the insert was near molten, but the outside plastic was unscathed.

  • hmm... thanks for all of the input. I was worried as this is a PR70DCAM. The picture the seller posted was not like this, so before I confronted the issue, I wanted to see if there was a way it could have happened enroute. Maybe it was sitting on the USPS delivery truck dashboard baking in the sun. Good to know it can be reholdered.

Let me guess. You were trying to reseal a slab. image

I had a slab that looked like that with one of the proof "golden dollars" (Jefferson I think). I had to paid PCGS to re-holder it. By the time I was done with shipping both ways, and the fees, I was out like $40. I only had like $20 into the coin. I was so disgusted with the whole affair I listed the coin on Ebay for $0.99 starting price. I think it sold for like $9. I'm apparently better at the spend'n than the make'n part of money.

    Welcome!

It looks like the knit line where the plastic runs into itself (plastic flows in one side until it fills the mold--where the plastic meets is a knit line). The plastic then looks like it was left in the hot sun (like in a car on a hot day).

It may have been placed in an oven in an attempt to AT the coin, and the collar melted.

Don't assume the seller's picture was done just prior to the sale....could have been from awhile ago and then decided to sell it (maybe even after it had that occur)

    Welcome to the forum.

I would have it reholdered considering it is a PR70DCAM.

I hope your not trying to AT the coin by sitting on the slit.

I have a Sacagawea dollar with multiple slits in the outer ring, I believe it was caused by the slab being in the heat to long and the inner ring dried up and cracked.

If it is worth it, I agree with those who say to have it re-slabbed for the 10 dollar fee.
