Postman was good to me yesterday, Part 1: Clipped 1913 cent

It's not often lately that I get the chance to add coins to what I call my "core collection." These are sets that I started building ten or more years ago, and coins to extend or improve them just don't come along with any frequency. That said, in the last two weeks I got the chance to make nice additions to my clipped cent, off-center dime and CircCam™ type sets, and thanks to a couple of timely BST sales I was able to capitalize on all three. Since they're all much different, I decided to post about them each individually.

First up, a massive upgrade (it replaces a worn Good-6) to my clipped cent set, this 1913 cent. This was an eBay purchase from 'frosty444', I probably overpaid a bit but who knows when another equivalent coin would appear. In the hand I grade it 63RB, there is a small carbon spot on the obverse but the surfaces are otherwise nicely original. You will note the absence of a strong Blakesley effect on this coin, however the metal flow at either side of the clip is present and the inside edge of the slip shows the cut/tear transition common to genuine curved clips.

I have to say that I don't really like clips but that is a pretty one!

It's interesting that such a coin could survive for so long in such beautiful condition.

    Excellent upgrade image

I saw that one when it popped up in my searches Sean.

I must say I didn;t really care for the way he cropped the picture because it cuts off part of the clip so it was difficult to tell if it was genuine but I'm glad the coin turned out great for ya! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I had exactly the same concerns, he actually cropped inside the clip and bit the part of the rim that best shows the metal flow. I wrote the seller not long after the auction began and asked for the raw uncropped photos and he wrote back that the photos were untouched. image He also said he'd guarantee the clip was genuine, and offered a full return if I was unsatisfied, so knowing that and having seen this seller around for a long time with a decent rep, I decided it was worth the shot.

His pictures are a little light, while mine are a bit dark (that's what I get for using a green background and fluorescent lights). I actually downloaded a bunch of SpaceMonkey's templates this afternoon with the idea that I'd finally take decent photos of the entire set, so this coin along with lots of others will get a proper photo soon.
