Here's a fake 1795 DBSE Dollar offered as legit! (Update: Seller calls me out right in auction desc

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120319961399&fromMakeTrack=true

Seller is an avid buyer from China. Thinking a tip off to the Secret Service is in order since Ebay seems complicit with this nonsense.

Edited to add: After alerting seller to concerns re authenticity of his coin and that I would be reporting him to the US Secret Service (I did), Seller naturally saw fit to send me a series of vulgar emails. Then, he adds the following to his auction: TO EBAY MEMBER jdillane FROM MI. I AM WAITING YOU SEND VULGAR AND THREATNING EMAILS BACK IT UP I AM WAITING FOR YOU BIG MOUTH. RIVER BOAT MOUTH ROW BOAT BUTT.

I am not certain what he means (row boat butt?) but I am hopeful that the Secret Service at least looks in to this. Not certain how ebay deals with these but gather they tend to leave them to run absent proof positive.

Heck, what with over-grading, bad economy, poor eye appeal, fake slabs, scam sellers that don't deliver, etc, a buyer of a slabbed coin off eBay is just gambling. Especially at $8,100.00 !

Maybe so, but seller has a f/b score that does not automatically raise concerns. Hard to believe that someone would bid/offer more than a token amount, but it does happen.

I bet next time he will use two separate accounts. Looks like he is a major importer of coins from China.

Seller doesn't buy from China, seller is in China! Well, at least he used to be in Bejing. Now he's in Illinois?
    Hmmmmmm

Ok, I have no idea what the real deal looks like. According to Breen this is the head too far left version. Well,
I do not have a clue as to what to look for as in diagnostics. I'm sure many on this board have never seen, let
alone handled one. So, Jdilane, please give us the knowledge. I would like to "see" the difference between
this fake and the real deal. Can you help with that? Can others help?

Are the dentils too even? That would be my only guess.

    Thanks,

I suspect this guy is Chinese.

In their description, they use the would 'happy'. I don't know about you, but I find when a Chinese seller describes their coins, they somehow always use the word 'happy'.

Maybe it's just me, but when I read 'happy' in a coin desription, I think counterfeit.

  • If you look closely you would see evidence that this coin was struck in a collar.
The uniformity is not consistent with Bust era coinage, maybe a couple months old is more accurate.
Then the wear pattern is inconsistent with the fields.
Scrubbed across the surface doesn't mean it ever circulated...
I have to agree with jdillane fake is fake.

I even think the Chinese silver he has for sale is counterfeit!
Who would be so stupid to sell 1 Kilo of silver for $8.65

    I just checked his feedback.

As stated earlier, this guy has purchased a truck load of good from China!! I know it all to be counterfeit. No doubt about it, and he's selling it a genuine.

How do you shut a guy down for operating like this??

Reported to eBay for making personal attacks when selling. It will be interesting to see if they do anything.

  • I had a guy bid on one of my items a couple weeks ago, he ended up 2nd, then sends me a bunch of emails saying he bid X amount and should of won, and that he
is one of the most aggressive bidders on ebay blah blah blah...

So i just ignored him thinking he would go away..he kept on bugging me so I blocked him..he then started sending threatening emails, so I checked his FB and
was shocked...he had a lot of good feedback but 98% of it was buying fakes from China.......hundreds & hundreds just in the last couple months,

I'm sure he has or will sell them under a different account..........unbelievable !

He has done nothing wrong that I have seen so I'm not putting his ID here, but I'm gonna keep an eye on him......

From my experience the US secret service might talk to him and make him sweat but they will not do anything unless he is adding zeros to currency or creating his own us currency. This is not their bag! It may be more internet fraud type of thing.

The Secret Service could care less if this is a counterfeit coin, now if he was selling packs of $100 bills for less than face value, it might perk their interest.

As most states consider anything over $2000 to be a felony, well, that would be the way to go, that and since he uses the USPS, the Postal Inspectors would be more than happy to be involved, you don’t mess with the Feds! They have the resources to go after people who send knock-offs through the US mail system, mind you, not that I’m saying this is a counterfeit coin, it would take more than just images on the internet to define this a true replica meant to deceive.
