Bought an 1870-CC quarter. Warning: numismatic horrors inside.

This key date 1870-CC quarter was included in the set of Bust & Seated quarters I bought last week from a personal friend. Isn't she sweet?

The reverse? Congratulations on this great set. What else were you able to aquire? Any leftovers for the rest of us?

  • that is a rare coin, cleaned VF but rare. It would be the corner stone of most every one collection here. I bet the stock market isn't too big of a problem for your friend after those proceeds

It is an 1870-CC quarter, which is greatimage

As for the reverse, is that my screen? Too bad but I guess it made the coin affordable....

  • What a shame that the reverse is that way on such a rare coin. No wonder you didn't want to post the reverse.

Great coin...how were the other early CC's? Were the 1880's mostly Proofs?

No such thing as an affordable 1870-CC quarter.image

The one 1873-CC is beautiful, but my photos of it were not, so maybe I'll post that one some other day. There is a 2nd beat up 1873-CC Arr. included as a filler for the 1873-CC NA, which is missing. The 1872-CC is "OK" and the 1871-CC is badly damaged. The 1879-90 coins were all proofs except 1879, 1883 and 1890.

What a pity! Reminds me of the otherwise choice AU 52-O 25c in the Eliasberg collection with an "X" on it.

But scratched up or not, that 70-CC is still worth beaucoup bucks. Can't wait to see the other CCs in this set.

Looks like you bought that one from Edward Scissorhands personal collection!

    What a Nightmare!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

You should have seen the look on my face when I saw the stunning obverse of that 1870-CC sitting in the album... then flipped the page and looked at the back. Arrrrrghh.

That is a spectacularly rare coin as you well know and REV issues or not there are likely no seated quarter collectors that wouldn't love to own it. I just couldn't afford it image

Interestingly, many 20c coins have the same cut marks reverse. I did some research a few years ago and many of these smaller silver coins were used as a cigar cutters block back in the day. Many will retain some of the black tar too.
Amusing history and it helps me to easily accept the 'damage' and provides a bit of history as the scratches are not simply random and of a vandalistic nature but instead gives the coin reason and purpose.

Someone had not the slightest idea about what they were doing to such a coin.
BUT, they probably didn't care since they would eventually die and never see the TRUE value for this coin.

BTW - Not a nice coin, but excellent date to acquire. image

Neat story but hard to fathom why one would use a coin in that manner as it would dull the blade. I have cut way back on cigar consumption but find biting off the end is as effective as any cutter I have used.

I would probably entertain having the reverse repaired. She's got ample details and lacks original skin....just seems an option to consider.

It's more original than it looks. For some reason, I have the lighting all wrong this week, and nearly all of the photos I took make the coins look cleaned (or making the cleaning look worse than it is). Any cleaning done to this one was very light, not that it matters with all those gouges. The only thing I hate worse than a damaged coin is a repaired one, so I will leave this one as-is.
