1943-S 1C - MS-66 or AU...

Bought this a couple weeks ago. Just had a close look at it this weekend. Paid MS-66 money. Photo pretty accurately show the coin. What's your take on Grade? MS or AU?

It looks MS but obviosly has a nasty scuff across Abe's shoulder and face. Maybe it was scuffed by another coin in a roll. It is rub, but I dont think its rub from circulation if that makes any sence. My guess is MS63. Without the scuff you may be right about the MS66 part.

Clearly MS but not sure about the luster breaks on the obverse. I would not recommend paying 66 money for a raw steel cent given the down side risk.

Sorry for the hijack, but speaking of steel cents, my father-in-law just mailed me a 1943 steel cent he got in change a couple weeks ago. Appears to be a solid XF45 or so. I didn't want to burst his bubble by telling him it was worth about 50 cents... image

As for this piece... I think it appears MS but I think it's probably more like 64.

Hammered coin , but the scuff is distracting to me, I prolly only would have went 64 $, but if you like it then image

edit to add , nice flowlines for a cent !

That reverse looks 66 for sure zeebob. Again, too bad about the big bruise on Abe.

I picked this one up a few weeks ago. It received a 67 from PCGS despite its reverse.

Now that is the sort of coin I was hoping for from Jack Beymer (don't get me wrong - Jack is one of the Good Guys with a capital G's - no question about it).

I did buy an MS-67 in an ANACS holder from him at the same time (both site unseen) and I was a bit happier with it, but still not really happy - it has some splotchy haze or something on the surface - I'll crack it out and give it the acetone treatment - maybe it'll get better.

I have NEVER had a site unseen transaction I've been happy with. I guess I'm just to picky.

I bought a P and D at a coin show in MS-66 in PCGS holders about a year ago and am tickled with them - no haze, no spots, no rubs. Couple of small contact marks if you look close. Good flow lines. But I haven't been able to find a really nice -S. I'm hoping to find one and get it put in PCGS plastic as MS-66 (or better if I have to) so I have a nice set of three coins.
