Ouch grading/crossover slaughter

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,625 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, not a real slaughter, but I was surprised....

Line # Item # Cert # PCGS No. CoinDate Denomination Variety Country Grade
1 1 12478152 2427 1909-S VDB 1C US MS64RB
2 1 12478153 3308 1910 1C US Altered Surfaces
3 1 12478154 2139 1881 1C US DNC
4 1 12478155 2402 1905 1C US PR65BN
5 1 12478156 5074 1939 10C US DNC
6 1 12478157 6675 1958-D 50C US Artificial Color
7 1 12478158 7360 1923 $1 US DNC
8 1 12478159 97409 1972 $1 Type 2 US MS63

Most of these were bought from dealers that would stand behind them and I agree with the NGC grades on them. I had the membership expiring in a couple months, don't plan on buying any others unless they pop up unexpectedly, so I decided to send these in before I forgot to do it.

The 1909svdb I wanted in PCGS and was happy it crossed
The 1910 is a MPL in NGC's holder. Not purple/blue image but it is toned.
The 1881 is toned. MS66BN in NGC
The 1905 is an Eagle Eye stickered one that I need to send back to Rick for his sticker again image
The 1939 surprised me...it's a proof. Should have crossed, but it is PR67 so maybe PCGS doesn't like them that high coming in in another holder (to be on the safe side in case there is something they can't see....)
The 1958-D is toned pretty coolly, in my opinion, and it was very debatable if it would cross. It is in a PCI holder. I didn't pay that much for it, so it was fun to try and see what they thought.
The 1923 is toned and bought from a board member. I am ok with this though I wish it would have crossed. It's NGC MS63
The 1972 is the funny one. Bought on ebay from a board member here. He bought it in PCGS MS62, thought it should be MS63, so he cracked it and NGC'ed it. Got a MS62 and then got frustrated and put it on ebay where I bought it. So, this one went up a bump image

I do wish the 1910 MPL and the 1881 IHC had crossed, but, all said and done, I am fine with the above.

They still haven't finished my quarterly "freebie" nor my SAEs in my modern submission, but, if they look as bloody as the above, they can wait image

Got pic of the 1910 MPL, Ron? I don't think you did all that bad, at least some of them graded.

I recall...and I told you it was YOUR submission holding mine up image

Last year, I went 4 for 4 on crossovers, so I was expecting a little better image
Makes me think my eyes aren't that good....

Paul....let me look for a pic. I do have some but not sure how good they are, or where they are right now.

I just cracked out 6 CBH's from Ngc holders and sent then in for gradeing. Was thinking maybe I should've sent them in for a crossover, but now I'm thinking I did the right thing, but what if they all bodybag.Oh crap I screwed up!!!!Thanks for bringing this up and causing me to have a panic attack!image

All jokes aside,it aint funny how differently the major tpg's grade coins. You really never know what to expect.

I thought about cracking some of these out but didn't feel like doing it to the svdb, the MPL, or the IHCs. Since I needed 8, I felt more comfortable just leaving them all in their respective plastics.

  • TennesseeDave- one lesson I recently learned was that if they look good to you and come back in a BB, RE-SUBMIT and let a different set of graders (hopefully) look at the coin. I did this with 2 NGC coins (Capped Bust Half Dimes)- both AU that I cracked out and were BB'ed - 1 for "cleaning" and 1 for "altered surfaces". I resubmitted both and both graded the 2nd time around.

As simple as this sounds, I sold a few coins raw at a loss last year when they didn't grade and felt like an idiot for cracking them out of NGC holders. I've decided though that if they look okay to you AND to the graders at NGC, there is a good shot that it will eventually look ok to the graders at PCGS.

Nice one, Bochi.man. Of all ... that one is probably key in keeping you happy on the results.

TennesseeDave, I have to agree with Bochiman here....their's a comfort in sending in major TPG slabbed coins for crossover.

I just had 2 of 6 NGC graded CBH's cross at the existing grade.

Notice Line #1....Altered Surfaces...and that's in an NGC holder.

    image

I also once sent in 6 NGC graded coins and asked PCGS to cross at any grade they choose....A REAL disaster.

The worst example in the group was an 1835 CBH graded MS61 went to a PCGS AU55!!!!

That was my first and last cross at any grade submission.

Would love to have that NGC MS61 back for sure!!!

In my heart, I know it was not an MS61....closer to AU58 IMHO.

I wish you all the best on your submission...keep us informed!!!

edited to add: This submission was the one that held up Bochiman's submission!!! image

Thanks for the blow by blow.

Also, a pic of the '09 S VDB would be well received. image

If you cracked them all out you might not have felt good getting them back, atleast this way some crossed and others are still in their old homes. Good news on the S-VDB helps.

Nice, the SVDB sure helps. I have a few NGC S-VDB's going this week, I'll hope for the same results !!

Your comment was my thinking as well.
Sure, they might have crossed (if raw), or even gone up, but there is an equal, or greater, likelihood (depending on the grader, the coin, the mood, etc) that I may have gotten back lower grades or body bags.
I try to buy the coin, not the plastic, so these are all "ok by me" in their current plastic.

The only reason I sent them in is to potentially enhance the value...and, oh yea, to play the registry game image
(and because I didn't have 8 raw coins that I thought were submittal worthy)

I have never failed to get a coin to cross. I did have one DNC, but it was graded on the next try.

Your story on the 1972 is similar to my experience with a proof liberty nickel. (of course a few years passed between the initial and final grades)

FYI, I've had multiple examples of WWII proofs in NGC 67 holders which
did not cross to PCGS. Frequently, there's a big price jump from 66 to 67,
so maybe they scrutinize closely. I've also had minimal success getting
CAM-designated 1950s proof coins crossed from NGC to PCGS.
