2008 Platinum, to send for grading or not?

Is it worth it to even send these in? If so, PCGS or NGC? It seems that the spread between 69s and 70s is dwindling fast. What do you guys think?

I agree if you don't have a registry set why do it. The OGP will bring what a MS/PF 69 does without the fees. The 70's have really come down on the spreads but really have you ever seen a perfect coin before, I haven't. Really you have to look to tell the difference between a 69 and a 70. If I were to get one graded I'd go with PCGS since they bring more but you might have a better chance of a 70 with NGC.

I guess my way of thinking is how cool would it be to have a orginal proof set from the 30's or 40's in the goverment packing. It seems everyone is playing the grading game. Just like other collectables sometimes the packing can be worth as much as the item if it's rarely seen. JMO

Couldn't agree more with your sentiments. I actually like the OGP MUCH better than the slabs for moderns. That said, my plats are slabbed because the 70s bring a lot more than the 69s and raw, despite the fact that there is no real difference between them. On the classic side, I have seen several Pan Pac sets for sale with all the coins slabbed and the beautiful OGP included. Wouldn't it have been much nicer to have left them in the OGP?

I do see value in slabs for authentication and for standardization of grades (much like GIA and diamonds). However, esp. for moderns, I can't stand them and think that they are pointless (again, the 69 vs. 70 - who can tell the difference?). Of course, like many of us, I think of the plats, etc. as a bit of diversification of my invensments and hold them long term, and the 70s are just worth more.

Sorry for the rant, I've just often thought exactly what you said and am glad to see that I'm not alone.
