Token Designation?

So I understand with darkside coins KM# are often used. I understand some of the lightside die variety designations (R-1, etc)... But what about transit tokens?

I see listing on ebay like:

GOOD FOR ONE FARE-WARREN TRANSIT CO TOKEN - 2783C

FITCHBURG & LEOMINSTER ST. RAILWAY TRANSIT TOKEN MA270B
CAT. # 270-B WM. 22mm

Helena MT Montana Transit Token #480F

What are the numeric or alpha-numeric designations?

I picked up a book at B&N a month ago on US Tokens (Whitman press), but it didn't really have any of the tokens I'm trying to be shed of in it. Sigh...

I just listed twelve transit tokens and am now sort of feeling like I should buy a book or something that would clue me into what the heck I'm doing... Any ideas on how to ascribe a designation to a transit token?

I've got another dozen or so transit tokens to photo and list and a stack of what I think are called "tax tokens?" After that I should be back to coins... Coins are much easier for me to understand. It looks like anyone with a few bucks and strike a token. Heck, even wooden nickels seem to be collected by people - who'd a thunk it.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

You'll need to add Russ Rulau's token books and Atkins Transportation tokens book to your library. The designations come from those volumes.
