Is there a source online that has listings for the various numbers and the dates associated with them? Thanks!

Thanks for posting but I stumbled upon this already. Is there something that lists what the varieties entail, say what exactly qualifies a coin as N-7?

  • I'm not familiar with any online attribution sources. Published works incude, Bill Noyes' book on Middle Dates and/or John Wright's The Cent Book illustrates (is an attribution guide) for the Middle Date Newcomb varieties 1816-1839. Bob Grellman's attribution guide for the Late Date Newcomb varieties of 1840-1857. These books will serve you well. Newcomb's book, although a great work in itself, is not a friendly attribution guide. Wright and Noyes have photographic illustrations, and Grellman's excellent line drawings - much better than photos would be for identifying the late dates. All contain very good descriptions of obverse and reverse diagnostics.
