Three TPGs Three BBs Three different Reasons

I sent this to ANACS about two years ago and it came back detail grade MS 60 rim damage. There is a small rim nick at 7 oclock on the reverse . Cracked it out about six months ago and sent it to NGC with five other free submissions and figured they might be forgiving for such a small nick. BBd for reverse cleaned. One last shot-sent it in two weeks ago to PCGS for the quarterly special and it BBd for altered surface. I now have a Barber dime in mint condition with a rim nick which has been cleaned on the reverse and has altered surfaces. Two positive things came out of this. All TPG are not alike and it was a nine day turn-a -round from the day i mailed the coins to PCGS to the day i received them.

Looks like PCGS and NGC are in agreement and Anacs got it wrong?

Regardless of what the TPGs say I like it and based on what I can see in the small pictures it would make a great Dansco 7070 addition.

True, except that it didn't have the problems when it left the Mint, so it's not in "mint condition". Mere technicality, I suppose.

I've had a coin go from NGC AU50 to PCGS XF40 to NGC XF45 and to PCGS VF35 (didn't actually grade this because of the min crossover grade, but they stated that on the label). Might as well just throw darts at a grade.

    Hey pcgs69,

Just curious, did you crack that coin out each time you sent it to NGC and PCGS or just leave it in the holder for crossover?

I left it in the holder each time. If it was raw, I'm sure they'd find a way to give it a bb.

Since this coin has given you so much trouble, you should send it to me and forget about it.

    What a merry-go-round of a learning experience.

Question is: do you like it and are you happy with it?

    Good luck with this coin...

Altered surfaces and cleaned, as mentioned by PCGS and NGC, can mean virtually the same thing. Additionally, ANACS flagged the coin for the rim ding, but they did not state that it had neither altered surfaces nor a cleaning. Therefore, all three services might view the coin in a similar manner.

  • From the pictures, the OP coin looks "thumbed" and "altered surfaces" probably nailed it best. So NGC says one side's been cleaned? How can that be since both sides look the same?

Gotta love these TPG. Throwing darts?

This is a good example of why you shouldn't buy problem coins. Just think of how much has been wasted on TPG fees and postage.

Your eyes must be waaaay better than mine.

  • Rim nick? Hmmmmm? If the nick was on the coin itself and not on the rims it grades ok? I dont understand. Why is a rim nick not ok but a field nick or device nick ok? I dont understand. Please explain someone.

It would almost be funny, except it would be rude of me to laugh at your woes.

Keep that beauty raw. Some coins just ain't meant to be in plastic. Doesn't change their appeal any.
