Grade this Franklin 1950 Proof - SEE CONSERVATION PICS OCT-18

New purchase - Raw 1950 Frankie Proof

Any thoughts on how this will grade out at PCGS/NGC?
Trying to decide if I sell it or send it in for grading.

How "in the world" do you insert insert pictures into the body of a post?
I only get the written link to show up. Confusing?

As far as the attachments, CU will only attach files that are smaller than 50KB (pretty small!)

    Help
    Thanks!!!

64-66. Can't really grade proofs with much accuracy from pictures. It looks like you do have a shot at cameo, though, which would be a major score.

Thanks Guys - I think I may send it in to NGC for grading. I paid $279 for this coin and if it
comes back 64-66 (cam will be a BONUS)... it will be a good win!

I have a 66 cam in my registry NGC set so just in case it comes back the same I can pick and choose which one
    I keep.

    Best regards

I does look gradeworthy - get some good photos of it before you submit... Why NGC and not PCGS?

Maybe an extreme closeup of the coin would help - on a 45% angle with light sources that show the details of the surface?

I'd say 64/65, good contrast but not enough to cameo. Might get a premium if you send it to NGC and get a star because of the contrast.

That coin would seriously cam at either PCGS or NGC.

I agree with John. It's worth a shot with PCGS. Certainly looks original. 1950 cameos are TOUGH.image

It has a shot at Cam, but those mirrors are a bit shallow. Not a bad coin, it's just that the services are really tight right now. You might think about sending it to NCS, they might be able to help out the coin and make the mirrors come through better. Then a cam would be in order. The frost is very pleasing.

keep in mind that we're assessing a picture, and pictures tend to exxagerate the frost and the mirrors/contrast. also, as others have pointed out, assuming anything to be a lock currently is a big mistake.

DON"T waste any money sending that Frankie in.

Send it to me - for my album of raw Proof frankie's that I have going with my raw Mint set Frankies

I'll save you a ton of headaches and money to boot.

and he will have a nice home in a 40 yr old folder for coins of his stature.

    PM me on your price.

Frosty in the right places, especially the reverse.

Thank you all for your comments. i found them very useful and in one case, I got a great chuckle from Morganhunter 2's comments below!
I sort of like the idea of sending it to NCS and seeing if they can clean up the mirrors. Looks like most of you are suggesting that I send to PCGS for grading
rather than NGC. Guess it will be worth the normal premium PCGS brings a coin. Wonder if it is common practice to just send it to NCS for conservation
and return to me and then send to PCGS for grading?

Thanks again for the helpful comments!

I must totally agree with this comment. Even when you think you have a lock... you might find yourself with a bill for a piece of plastic that angers you... I know I have here recently.

Nice coin. I still need the 50 and 51 for my Franklin proof set. Good luck with the grades. I see it as a 4 shot 5. Maybe CAM

NOW GRADE THIS 1950 FRANKLIN - JUST GOT IT BACK FROM NCS AND HERE ARE THE PICTURES. WHAT DO YOU THINK NOW?
It appears to me that the reverse is a cameo, but obverse is light.

Do you think the conservation services improved the coin?
Take a look down the string of replies and compare to pre-conservation.

Which service has highest chance getting a Cameo rating...PCGS or NGC?

It's too bad that NCS removed the original rim toning. If those are milk spots beyond the Y in LIBERTY and below the Bell on the reverse it might be tough to receive any grade above 64. Still has a shot at Cam, but it's still hard to tell with images. Good buy for $279 however.

The first set of images made the coin appear to be very attractive while the second set seem to highlight some hairline issues. In my opinion, the eye appeal has been severely harmed since it now looks like any of the other of hundreds of dipped Franklin proofs whereas before it had some character or life.

I just looked at the coin with a 20X-12MM and could not see any milk spots.

Guess they just looked like them in the 2 other images that were removed.

how come you didn't have it sent directly for grading?

I kind of liked it better before image

If you don't mind sharing, what did that cost you to conserve?

I was not sure if I wanted to send it to NGC or PCGS for grading, so had NGC return the coin to me.
Still not sure if I am going to grade coin or put it up for sale on ebay for $1K and see if any takers.

Looking at the coin with the naked eye, it looks fantastic. I have a 1950 NGC 66 Cam
in my registry set and compared them side by side. Sure looks very similar to me, but
I am certainly no expert and usually guess incorrectly.

I agree with TomB. The coin had eye appeal before the dip. Now it looks sterile.

I think sending it to NCS was a major downgrade. I much preferred the pre-cleaned look and it appeared to have frostier devices as well.
