1917-S Quarter

This is my cousin's coin. We were talking about his collection and when I told him I thought this coin had been cleaned at one time, he seemed to get offensive with me. He said," Most coins that are this old have been cleaned at one time or another anyway." I said I would post the coin here (with his approval) on the boards and see what the result would be. Any additional commentary is welcome (example- Coin is ugly, stop giving your cousin a hard time etc.....)

It may have been cleaned, but I don't see any hairlines from your image.
I'd probably say that it isn't cleaned, just a nice looking coin.

It's a nice circulated coin with a pleasant look to it and has no obvious signs of a harsh cleaning. I don't think it really matters if it had a light cleaning in that grade as long as it looks nice.
  • The 1917 Type 1 quarter has always been one of my favorites!

This coin appears to have been cleaned to me.

You are fortunate to have cousin that shares your enjoyment of coin collecting.image

The reverse appears to be old cleaning. The coin is still a nice VF30 details SLQ...

light cleaning perhaps as stated though not at all unacceptable its a coin i would not mind buying.
  • I'm certainly not an expert on cleaning, but it seems to me all the lighter areas on the reverse and darker shades in the protected areas makes it LOOK like it was rubbed pretty vigorously at some point in the past. Am I wrong?
