Lewis and Clark Coin and Pouch Set - about 150 pouches - Warning, bandwitdth BUSTER!

Another post about weird US Mint products got me thinking about the Lewis and Clark Coin and Pouch Set from the Mint. Have you ever wondered what most of the pouches looked like? If so, here are about 150 of them!
My favorites are 9 and 15. There are some duplicates in the mix. You can tell that some artists put a lot of time into these and look awesome, some just put on big beads and they are rather poor.

Have the Chinese knock-offs hit the market yet?

Wow. I completely missed these. Never knew they existed until this post. I must have been in a coma.

I can see why some are nicer than others.

Not sure. They could be too busy making official pouches the US Mint is paying for image

Umm, which ones are nicer, the ones from the tribes recognized by the Federal government or the ones from the tribe recognized by the State of Ohio? According to Wikipedia, the United Remnant Band of the Shawnee Nation is recognized by the State of Ohio but not the Federal government. I'm sure there's some politics involved. Are any of the pouches above from this Federally disavowed tribe?

Thanks for the photos. I didn't realize they came in such great variety. Very cool. image

I did not mean to knock any particular band of Native Americans.

I wanted to observe that these items were actually made by Native Americans (rather than "slave kids in china")

That explains why you have so many different designs and also so many different levels of quality.

The various indian nations are...quite varied. The level of artwork you see from various tribes across the US has always been all over the map.

  • Mine is close to # 205, just a tad different.

The case of the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band of Ohio is actually somewhat interesting. The US Mint Press Release says that no state authority recognizes this group:

<< <i>The United States Mint has learned that neither state nor Federal authorities recognize the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band of Ohio as an official Indian tribe. >>

However, this webpage says the following:

<< <i>The Shawnee Nation, United Remnant Band is a STATE-RECOGNIZED Historical Tribe. It took 2 years of testimony hearings in front of a Special House Committee and this legislation had to be voted upon and passed by both the Ohio Senate and the House of Representatives. This JOINT resolution was passed by the House of Representatives in July 1979 and by the Senate on January 29, 1980. The Shawnee Nation, United Remnant Band is the only Ohio State Recognized Tribe.

Refer to House Joint Resolution Sub. Am H.J.R. Copies of the Official State Recognition are available at the Ohio Supreme Court Law Library 65 South Front Street 10th Floors Columbus, Ohio 43215-3431

Reference can also be found in the Santa Clara Law Review Volume 48 Section 12. >>

There seems to be some inconsistency.
  • Wow!
I didn't realize they were so varied.
    Nice collection.
I wonder what the leather pouch will do as far as toning the silver??

Actually, when these were released, there was a warning given that one should store the coin separately from the pouch as they could not guarantee that the leather would not have some effect on the coin. Based on old coins I have seen that were stored in leather pouches...the toning would not be the prettiest... usually very dark...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

jessewvu, I assume that's your collection? Tremendous. Must take up lots of space!
  • Some of those are kinda cool- and definitely better than the "Made in China" alternative.
