Is this a fake slab?

Link to ebay-auction

I noticed that this coin ended without bids on ebay.
It should be worth $30000, and it started at $4000. NGC Certified.

I can think of two possible reasons:
1 - The seller changed his mind and closed the auction.
2 - The slab is fake.

Some warning signs have been given:
a - The seller says "HARF" instead of HALF, indicating that he might be chinese.
b - Only picture of the front side of the slab.
c - All the other items this seller is selling, is in a significantly lower price range, and mostly in ohter categories than coins.

But... to me the slab looks real. Is it? If not, what gives it away?
Was this the possibility to make a bargain?

    Stolen pic and hijacked account?

It looks like too much recent activity to be a hijacked account?

I would expect many typos in my post, because I do not speak english. I'm norwegian.
  • Maybe the "fake bidders" with "fake emails" using "reverse chargebacks" got scared therefore they did not place a single bid?image

Actually, I was thinking the seller might be Scottish.

Click on the 0 Bids and you will find "The seller ended the listing early and cancelled all bids."

Seller shut it down after running for 25 hours.

"Illegitimis non carborundum" -General Joseph Stilwell. See my auctions
  • He modified the listing:

"can i just add, ive just found out how much this is really worth and it wont let me ad a reserve, so if i dont reach near it, i wont be selling"

  • He adds to the description "I've just found out how much this coin is worth and it won't let me add a reserve." He cancelled the auction.

Also he was only accepting bids from the UK, which would have severely limited the bidding pool for this level of US coin.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

Haha.. probably. But when other flags are up, my first thought is to be careful, knowing that many fakers from China pretend to be based in a western country. Often they reveal themselves by typos, and it's typical for chinese people to mix L and R. You can see a lot of on ebay. Just search for the typical fake coins.

I think you are confusing Chinese with Japanese which, from what I understand, has no sound for the english consonant "L" and many times comes out sounding like an "R".

One thing's for certain. The obverse and reverse shown are not from the same coin. The reverse I think is a half eagle.

I had a Chinese supervisor who would go on about the importance of checking the "Blake Fruid". Mike
  • Actually, you will find the R/L typos in several east asian countries. Not only Japan. In fact, you will also find it in China, even though the official language Mandarin distinguishes the R and L sound. This is because there are so many dialects there that do not distinguish the sounds.

  • I don't think the English spell check "cheque", or am I wrong?. Could be another African scam, considering the French lick on his spelling.

If he said "Harf" instead of "Half" wouldn't that make him a "pirate"?
