Do you 'have' coins that still haunt you?

I'm talking about ones that you weren't fast enough on the trigger, waiting for another few dollars off the price, or passed on because you surely thought there was a better one coming. For some reason, I really wished I got this 1820 large cent, NGC 64 RB in the old fattie slab. image

I'm lucky I still have an image.

    A couple...

...a Voce Populi Farthing ex Garrett that cost more than I was willing to pay at the time, but only by a few hundred dollars.

...a Fugio ex Eliasberg that I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on.
  • No worse then that I bought a raw MISSOURI 2x4 commerative that would easily grade 45-50 and sold it to pay a debt.

although that was back in the late 90's I still get sad when I think about it.

I went to the Santa Clara show many years ago, and immediately headed over to look
through boxes of John Schuch's inventory. There was a Hawaiian commem in PCGS 65
that had the most gorgeous opalescent mother-of-pearl toning. I asked him how much,
and he told me $4400. That was (and is) a lot of money for me to spend on a coin, but
this piece was jaw-dropping. I told him I'd have to think about it, and walked over to
another table. Within 10 minutes, I realized if I didn't buy that coin, I'd probably regret
it for a long time. Walked back over and was told that the very next person (a dealer)
to look at the coin bought it immediately. Well, I ended up being right: I still do regret
    not buying it.

Only one coin do I truly regret not buying, a 1914 Matte Proof a few months back in a PCGS 65BN holder. My tastes had refined greatly and this one would have made a perfect match to my ongoing set, but for some reason I just let it go. I'm not quite sure why.

  • Just happened to me today. It waited too long in my "watched items". I decided this morning that I was gonna buy it but it was gone already. I even looked at it before I went to bed...sigh.

one stays on top of my mind

i was 1 of 5 in partnership to acquire an 1894-s dime in the mid 80's

the week of the auction like 2 of the 5 flakedimage

even though at best limited partnerships can bite...i almost had a 20% stake in a 1894-s dime

1934 Light motto Quarter in MS65 to MS66 condition at an estate auction for $50.00 quite a few years back. Did not understand the significance of the motto and did not bring a loop to confirm the condition so I passed.

Same auction had a type dollar set that went above my budget at the time, but was still about 5% of its current value at the time.

Yep, a beautiful 1822 Large Cent PCGS AU50. It was a fixed price listing on eBay for a couple weeks and I never pulled the trigger. I assumed when I wanted one that it would be somewhat readily available. Never seen an attractive one since. Oh well.

That farthing is nice...it would haunt me too.

Julian, please turn your PM function on.
  • Yes, several coins I can remember.

I had a chance at a perfectly matched set of no stars half dimes and dimes in PCGS MS66 , blast white and stunning. That was about 10 years ago and I can still remember how perfect they were.
  • There was one coin that haunted me... but then I ended up buying it about a year and a half later from the guy that had bought it for his cost...

Click "profile" across the top of the page (in the row of buttons that says customize, profile, search, chat, today...)

Once your profile loads, go about half way down the page and you'll see

    Allow Private Messages: On Off

Click the radial button for on

Then click the UPDATE PROFILE button at the bottom of the profile page.

Once you've done it, you will see a padlock icon next to the lightbulb and printer icons on any of your posts to any thread and someone can then send you a private message by clicking that padlock icon.

Julian, select the "profile" option near the right-hand top of the page just beneath "Navigation" and then go to "Allow Private Messages" and choose yes or okay, whichever is listed at that place, then update your profile if requested.

I had the chance to view and purchase the only PCGS 1959 PR69dcam Franklin half for $9,000. I didn't buy it at the time because it didn't look right to me (artifically frosted). In the meantime, there has been considerable debate as to whether the coin is 'real' or not, but it remains in the PCGS holder.

I wouldn't keep it for my collection, but I can only imagine what the Registry hounds with deep pockets would pay for a top pop and only example of a very tough date in PCGS dcam these days.

  • a 1903-S Micro S ANACS AU55 that I watched sell on eBay for $3250. I was certain it was going to get bombarded by snipers, but it didn't. I don't know why I didn't bid. It's probably a $20k coin.

There is another one that still bothers me to this day - eBay user iras4 had a nicely toned 1893 Morgan in an ancient NGC MS-64 fattie slab. Not only was the coin a knockout in the images, it looked 65+ all day long. Starting bid was around $700, with a Buy it Now at around $1100, if I remember correctly. I saw it as a new listing one night, but decided to wait until morning to give it a shot. By that time, it was long gone. image

I have had two dreams, where the obverse of this coin come to life. She says nothing and flies through the air like a blur.

Really trippy what one can dream about. Wish I could record the dream some how.

A 1940 PCGS MS67 Jefferson I had a much, much larger bid on before my POS snipe program broke and didn't submit the bid.

Now, I have a better snipe program.
