How to spend over $600...and not have a complete 1987 Donruss Set

My goal with this set is 10% all PSA 10. Have two more on the way so I am not far from reaching my goal...which is somewhat amazing since this is not really one of the sets I have been trying to work on.

Seeing that Wally Backman brought back memories, I played ball for the same high school and coach some 18 years after Backman did.

No Gem Maddux? say it aint so...

I have been hoping the Maddux would drop in value, but it instead has went up the last year. From about $50-60 to $75-100. I did screw myself the other day. I got a second chance offer for a PSA 10, with PSA 8's of the Topps and Fleer for $65. I was like the 5th bidder down (didn't look but the auction went for like $85). I thought that really strange and a possible scam so I pondered it for a couple hours. Then I searched the guys auctions and decide it was likely legit. The seller had many like lots and also had 100% feedback. I figured I could get ~$10 back on the two 8s so I go back to the offer and it was canceled. I guess the seller had the first guy back out and second chanced half the bidders, canceling it when one took the offer? Thanks for opening a recent wound. I am going to go cry now.

By the way, the BGS 9.5 Maddux seems to go for around $50 from what I have seem...meaning the PSA 10 sells for around 2z the BGS 9.5.

Still need the Bonds but I have a theory they will drop to $20...but they do not look like they are going to.

Would also like to pick up the other cool (then) rookies, like Bonilla, Wally Joyner, Barry Larkin, Rubin Sierra, et al...this set is just loaded. It is almost the who's who of baseball in the late 80s and early 90s.

I always liked the look of the 87 Donruss set. You know, if you picked up a factory set, you'd probably get a boat load of PSA 10 quality cards.

Prettycool thing you have going. Love the dunston and the dk's. My next project after I finish one lol is all the DK's in either raw or psa form. I have most of them already but all up in mi. The eck is a sweet photo as well. On the second chance offer- I offer them all the time with pretty good sucess, many times I have multiple and start with the worst and usually write in the desciption in the offer better than the last.

    Digi-

Depends though you might yield many real nice cards from a factory they'll usually have slightly rounded corners. Ive found it alot tougher to obtain tens on these. Grading them is all over the map my suggestion is if anyone is to put them on the sub by themselves, atleast thats been my best experience but all in all I dont submit them anymore unless I get a freak set with sharpies.

1987 is when I got back into collecting, buying packs and bought a ton of Topps and Donruss. Those look sharp in a PSA holder, heck I have started picking up some 1987 Topps in PSA 9 and 10.

I started in 87 too, and will always have some love for the 3 baseball sets that year.

Nice 10s! And that PSA slab really brings out the sheen in Eddie Murray's jheri curl. Gaetti and Yount's mullets are really crisp and clear as well.

Edited to add: Vance Law and Dave Collins are the same guy, right?

    Fantastic cards MeteoriteGuy!

Best of luck on your project... looking forward to seeing more scans once you get'em!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

  • I love this set too. I mowed about 10 yards a week in the summer of 87 and spent almost every penny on boxes of 87 Donruss and Topps. I still remember the excitement of pulling a McGwire or Dale Murphy and had little clue who Bonds or Maddux were.

Old school Donruss always had a specific smell. Especially the '87 Opening Days.

I remember that smell. Someone should make a scratch and sniff sticker with that smell. I would stick them all over the house.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a sealed set of 87 Opening Day for $10 on eBay. I did a few weeks back and when I opened it, I was instantly transported back to sitting on the floor in my room as a kid sorting through cards.

A PSA 10 Maddux sold for 56.00 last week on ebay... >>

Yes, and another sold for like $83.00.

Now check the BGS side, $47-59.99,

Which you rather get, $47-59.99 or $56-$83?

Did you also check the auction photo of the $56 sale. It is blurry enough that I would pass it over and is the reason that seller likely left $20 on the table.

So maybe saying 2x was not correct, but the PSA 10 Maddux will outsell the BGS almost every time...as eBay completed auctions show. I have never seen a BGS Maddux sell for $60 or more, the PSA will almost every time. $60 has been my bid multiple times and I have never won one. Usually I am outbidded days before and I am not even the underbidder.

If you think comparing the highest BGS to the lowest PSA is accurate to numbers, then you can continue your BGS sells for more stance....it however simply is not true with most cards...unless that card is like an auto 9.5/10 or a desired card that is .5 from a 10.

Compare the lowest PSA to the lowest BGS, the highest to the highest, and PSA won both battles. Also the high sale BGS is one of the old labels...which I do not know about you, but I trust the older BGS graded cards over the newer ones.

Edit to add: I am not anti-BGS, so please don't try to go there. If you check the sale/trade forum, I posted an add wanting to buy 2000 Donruss Graded BGS cards yesterday..it is also an add I posted before. I imagine I have over 500 BGS cards in my collection and have no problem adding more. However, they won't be 80s Topps cards or likely anything pre-1990....unless it is really cheap. Like I would take one of the sheet cut Marino RCs for $10-20 just to have an example of such. But one would not be worth then that to me.

Everyone is welcome to and should collect what they want. However, one would also be wise to notice trends. BGS and GAI has been losing support the last couple years, to a level which can not be said about PSA or SGC. It looks very much like we are moving a three-tier grading level. PSA & SGC, then BGS & GAI, then all the others. GAI is however quickly become an other...but I think anyone will give them credit over Pro or Gem Mint or like.

I didn't bother reading all that... My point of pointing it out was just simply one sold for that amount and it seems as if it would of been a good buy for you is all.. not to compare prices or anything of the sort...

Edit to add: Geez where did all that come from? chill out a bit lol... Nobody is comparing PSA to BGS but you. Just trying to join in on the conversation a little. Next time I'll stay out of your thread.. sorry!!

I apologize if I read you wrong, you however have an anti-PSA history, and of course that will reflect in the minds of most forum readers when they read your postings.

I can not predict of course what the card would have went for had I entered the bidding, but with shipping it was already $60 and with the blurry photo, I would likely pass. I would hate to have the most valuable card in the set a PSA 10 I am not happy with....and not all PSA 10's are equal.

I think I can safely bet those two will remain low pop.

In the images one appears left handed and the other right handed so likely not. They did however both shop at the same discount Army Eye Glass Store. (Perhaps those are some type of 80s safety prescription glasses?)

But I'd rather buy 5 sealed rack cases for that money ... close to 50,000 cards

The graders don't punish for the slightly rounded corners on Donruss factory set cards, unless the rounding produced a ding as well. While you'll get some cards that wouldn't do better than a 9, you should be able to find at least 20+ cards through the set that would pull down 10s, unless you have horrible luck). The worst thing to worry about with these cards is the wicked surface wrinkle caused by the tight wrap.

True however being on the end of a sub 50 deep on 84-87 which I have and yielding all 9's on cherries I wont take that risk again.
Ive turned 10's on them on occasion but dont punish is a far cry from reality.

This isnt one sub this is years of experience in factorys. This is just a little insight for the common grader.

You are correct on the wrinkles they can ruin your day.
