Loaded up my coin cabinet just now.

Sure it has been pointed out to me it's a machinist cabinet, but that is not why I got it.

I like having most of my stuff in there. I talked with my bank, and they are willing to store the whole chest, so off it goes to the safety deposit.

I've got to get one of those for my inexpensive medals, exonumia, etc...it's very cool.

I think it's a very nice presentation. I would wonder about the glue, etc. and construction materials used, and what they may or may not do to the coins in the long term -- but I will say, it sure looks nice!

I didn't realize that banks had the capacity to store furniture like this in the vault.

I would be very curious on how it would be secured since it obviously will not fit in a 10x10.

It also must weight quite a bit.

I grew up in a small town with 2 banks. I can see them agreeing to put this in the vault if they had room. --Jerry

Yah right, I was in banking, there is no way in heck that a bank has the capacity to store a coin chest and I don't care if we are talking about a small town or big city, there are protocols, it just doesn't happen. Now if were are talking about Bedford Falls in George Bailey's time and you were he that is a different story but there are just no mom and pop banks around anymore and the 1930's are long gone, heck it was just a movie. image
    >>

You sould like you've been in every bank in the US. Look at this and tell me there are no mom and pop banks any more. Versailles, MO, where I went to high school had a population then of about 2000 and still does. looks like there are still two banks in town, both independent. One of my classmates was bank president last I heard. --Jerrythis

For this to happen you would need insurance. To get the insurance you need a security system and the coins have to be stored in a very expensive jewelers safe.

Well that's good enough for me but I would still have that sucker locked up tight! It does have a good lock on it? Right?

  • I for one would love to see a picture of it in the Vault once you get it there. I will figurtively (sp) swallow my tongue (sp) and roll on the floor laughing, for I would've bet on seeing pigs fly first.

Wow I was just hoping to show off my new piece. I guess I should just keep to myself. Good lord, let it die. Now I know why most old coin collectors are sorry old sob's, it's because you just can't enjoy the hobby without some one raining on your parade.

Nevermind I will just set it out for trash night, and forget it.

Dam some folks are REAL annoying.

  • For folks worried about wood/glue and other chemicals with a wood system....

Another inexpensive idea is to use a multi-shelf metal tool box from Sears....

Line it with Anti-tarnish cloth from a cloth shop....

  • I will point out one particular situation I know of.

There is a coin Dealer in my city that has his shop in the same center as a Local Bank. He's on the back side of their wall. He's stated to me that he stores his coins in their vault at nightime. He has a ton of stuff and don't know that it would fit easily in several SDB's, it may be possible that they've made a special arrangement with him. Could be he simply tells that to everyone just to prevent what burglaries he can, or maybe just told me that since I look like a career criminal image

Also, my son (believe it or not) is presently going thru 20-25 boxes of halves weekly. His bank has him carry the bags directely into the SDB vault and stacks them in the corner several times a week until the Armored Van picks them up. They take up quite a bit of space. I suppose it's certainly not impossible for a bank you're on good terms with to go out of it's way for you. I have had considerble relationships with banks and they have gone beyond what is expected at times.
However, I don't understand the logic of wanting a showcase that you can't show off if it's in the bank vault. Security would keep me awake at night. I don't think there are video cameras in the vault. I'd worry about employee theft - maybe I'm wrong though.

I second the request to see the photo once it's installed. Oh sorry, I forgot I was the one that made the first request too image

    Edited to say

Great response. I didn't see it until after I posted my long dissertion. ROFL. I'll drop it. Lovely showcase though, I like it. Just a thought on the glues, I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen coins stored in small envelopes put inside the vinyl sheets with PVC stored for decades in a safe with no problems at all.

    Ok let’s get focused again.

Great storage box and great adaptive reuse from its original purpose. Many have built their own custom boxes here and sold them, some have found antique cabinets. As for me, call me a sissy, but one of the best cabinets you can buy that will match almost any style of furniture in your home and avoid the high custom made and antique fees is a ladies armoire style jewelry box (see below)

They have plenty of drawers. The bigger drawers usually on the bottom will hold 4 PCGS boxes and the regular drawers will hold two blue boxes. You can place you raw stuff under the lid. The capital plastic boards will stack on edge in the side doors. You may have to remove a bit of hardware or glued in dividers to tweak it, but they do work. Make sure your blue boxes will fit before buying one. Or take a slab in your pocket if you just want to stack them without the boxes.

While the prices can easily be 6-$300, they are drastically reduced and readily available for sale in all major department stores just before Christmas. But better yet, just keep an eye out for damaged unit in the back room of your local furniture store…I got one for $75. It had a broken lid. I replaced the lid with a fake marble top and it looks great. Puta potted plant, lamp or statue on top and it looks like its just a pedestal for your plant or light.

  • As I said in the other thread, I believe this is a Gerstner cabinet.
Gerstner used to setup at the big machine tool shows I attended, and they also setup at some major coins shows.
The chest may be a tool cabinet, or it might be a coin-jewelry cabinet.
    There isn't much difference.
One thing,....the Gerstner cabinets are the best there is.
I've never owned one, but some of my employees have.
There are a real work, of the cabinet makers art.

  • I like it! I may look into something like that in the near future.

And to all those who are worried about whether its in a bank vault or not, doesn't it seem a prudent thing to say, true or not on a message board?

    Geez.

  • Very nice use of the chest. I like the green felt. And with slabbed coins, sliding around won't be a problem. GREAT!

I found a gun store that had a vault built in. The owner agreed to store a good sized box of coins for me for a fee that is about what I pay for my small safe-deposit box at the bank ($100/yr). It's not as easy to get to (bank is close, but gun store is about a 25 minute drive), but my bank would empty my wallet to store something the size of that cool coin cabinet.

Careful Zeebob, some may not believe your story.

The chest is only 26 in long and 18 inches tall, 11 inches deep, some have described it here as furniture. Maybe it looks bigger than it is, but it is not too big to store.
