Best wax boxes 1975-90

If you had to make a list what would be your top 20 boxes, regardless of sport, from 1975-90?

I normally rip most everything I buy but if I were going to keep 20 boxes they would be (in no particular order):

1) 79-80 OPC Hockey
2) 79-80 Topps Hockey
3) 85-86 OPC Hockey
4) 86-87 OPC Hockey
5) 76 Topps Football
6) 81 Topps Football
7) 84 Topps Football
8) 86 Topps Football
9) 89 Score Football
10) 75 Topps Baseball
11) 75 Topps Mini Baseball
12) 80-81 Topps Basketball
13) 86-87 Fleer Basketball
14) 87-88 Fleer Basketball
15) 88-89 Fleer Basketball
16) 78 Topps Baseball
17) 83 Topps Baseball
18) 77 Topps Mexican Football
19) 80 Topps Baseball
20) 80-81 OPC Hockey

    79-80 opc hockey
    80-81 opc hockey
    84-85 opc hockey
    86-87 opc hockey

    86,87,88 fleer basketball

    88,89,90 score baseball

    86,87,88,89,90 topps baseball

    What do i win?
  • If I was going to keep 20 boxes...

-79/80 OPC. Hands down the rarest.

-80/81 OPC. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd rarest (tied with 86 fleer basketball?). But you almost never see it.

    Then the 80's opc's....85/86, 86/87, 81/92.

    Then basketball...86/87, 87/88.

    Then football, 81, 84, 86.

Then maybe a few 70's baseball and football...76 ft, 78 bs, 80 bs.

All I can think of for now.
  • Must be a hockey fan to put the top 4 boxes of this era as hockey boxes. Is hockey even a professional sport any more? If I could have any two of the boxes on that list, I would prefer to have 86/87 Fleer bball and 75 Topps baseball.
  • Sorry to hear that you don't know hockey exists. I would have to agree on the 1979 OPC and the 1980-81 OPC. The others are available and I think to add some flair to my collection I will add an unopened wax box for each year of 80's hockey that I have complete. I thnk it would look nice. SO that would mean I need 1980 -81 81-82 and 85-86. Hockey get s no respect.

If I could I would get a 1986 Fleer BB as well.

Just talk about whatever he wants to talk about, and agree with everything he says, and you'll be just fine.

So, to continue with the HOCKEY TALK ... for fun, little cost, LOADED WITH great rookies, nice looking cards ...

    1990-91 Upper Deck
    1991-92 Upper Deck
    1990-91 OPC Premier
even 1990-91 Score (for the Lindros Rookie)

Those who hate Hockey, only hate, because their swamp dont freeze in the winter & cant skate
  • Yep, gotta love hockey. Nothing like a 14 month long season with no one south of the Great Lakes watching. Just my opinion of course, but I think golf is going to take the same hit hockey took in about 10 years. When Gretzky retired, the few Americans that cared about hockey quit caring. I figure the same will happen when Tiger retires.
  • Ignoring common sense and investment potential... For fun I would pick-

    All baseball

    1989 Fleer Rack
    1989 Fleer Cello
    1989 Fleer Wax
    1987 Topps
    1987 Donruss
    1982 Topps
    1989 Upper Deck (low)
    1975 Topps
    1976 Topps
    1977 Topps
    1978 Topps
    1979 Topps

    imageimageimage
  • I will made a for fun list as well.

    1984 Topps Football
    1978 Topps Football
    1982 Topps Baseball
    1987 Donruss
    1989 Upper Deck Low
    1983 Topps Baseball
    1981 Topps Football
    1989 Score Football
    2000 SP Authentic Football
    1975 Topps Mini Baseball
    1986-87 Fleer Basketball
    1986 Topps Football
    1985 Topps Baseball
    1985 Topps Football
    1989 Fleer

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • I almost completely agree with Ripkencollectors list accept for I would have to add 83 Donruss or Topps to my list. Tough to beat cheap wax with a chance at one of 3 HOF rookies.

    14 month season ?

Did you ever play floor hockey in school when you were young, by any chance ?

lol I almost added 1983 Fleer to my list. Only because when I was a kid I rec'd a wax box of it that someone at his store opened. All the cards were there but I always wanted to open a box of it.

    yes, i did image

i gave two kids concussions and suffered one myself; the next year there was no more floor hockey in gym class.

  • << <i>Did you ever play floor hockey in school when you were young, by any chance ? >>

No, I played real sports like baseball, football and golf. I did play air hockey a lot when I was younger. Does that count?

    What, no gator wrastlin' :-)

You are very snobish & and confident about about what a real sport is.
I guess if you say so, then it must be true.
At least that is what I've observed.
  • Real sport like football where if a guy gets hang nail or sprained ankle he doesn't play oh yeah and they play once a week, baseball where one some f your best hitter and players are over weight. I take a hockey as one of the only real sports out there. Take Ryan Smith in the Playoffs two years ago. He took a slapshot to the mouth picked up hs teeth put them on the bench and out on hs next shift.

    Is that English?

I think watching a professional hockey game in person would change your mind LSUtigers, I'm sure you (hopefully) were joking around about hockey not being a sport.

The top hockey players are indisputably world-class athletes. It's pretty amazing to me what those guys can do, especially on skates.

  • Actually watch about 10 professional hockey games a year, not NHL, but still professionals. I actually just like messing with the diehard hockey fans. They always seem to get offended as if I was talking about their mommas.

    Hockey still sucks.

    Nope, he is not kidding.
He's got it ranked below gator wrestling
