1812 Large Cent .. Variety Experts .. Help !

Hello ...

Any thoughts for what variety this 1812 Large Cent may be? Specifically, please note the recut/repunched number 2. Also, take note of the left stars.

The obverse shows recutting above the right foot of letter T which is listed under S.289. However, S.289 does not show a recut/repunched number 2.

Thank You

The area around 2 looks to be a little strike doubling. The areas around the stars look to me like a lamination/planchet problems.

In short, looks like a 289 to me.

Hello ... I don't see strike doubling as the separation is significant.

    Thanks

Doesn't appear to be significantly separated from the photos, it appears slight and shelf-like to me, just like strike doubling would. That, and everything else points to a 289.

Are you suggesting that you have a never-before-described die state with a repunched 2? I suppose it is possible, but I would be VERY surprised. That said, my knowedge of this series is eclipsed by a great many people....

Hello Mike ... Thanks for the info. Not sure what happened to this coin, especially the left stars. The 2 could be doubling but I see quite a bit of separation under magnification plus the "line" is also thick instead of flat???

    Thanks
  • Hard to say with actually seeing the coin, but I'd tend to agree with Mike's observations. A repunched 2 would make it a new variety or should I say NC, and highly unlikely that that that discovery would have eluded the copper community until now. If you are convinced it's a repunched numerial contact contact Bob Grellman for attribution and an opinion.
  • Hello ... as requested, images updated.

    Thanks
