  • Thanks,
Not much time spent on the forums to figure out how to get the picture showing like you got them. Thank you again.

    nice pics actually.
work on the color though. get that background white as it should be?
    i assume a white background.

as for the grade.. i was thinking that i do not see any luster in the
    pics so a 35-40.

but do not take my word for it. i suck at grading wheaties in mid
    grade ranges.

Looks like a 53 to me, but also looks like 2 spots were removed on the reverse, resulting in a bodybag.

  • Thanks for your input. There are two small corrosion spots on the back as can be seen in the picture. I was thinking the grade would be around XF 45 but I like to be conservative.

  • EF-45. I would carefully examine the spots and any verdigris to make extra sure no damage was done by someone trying to pick at it/them. Occasionally, you will find scratches within spots.

  • Looks AUish to me with a below average strike. I'd go 55.

Cmon folks, thats an easy AU. Color and originality I cannot judge from a pic.

Put a second source of light on the opposite side of the coin to help pull out the details.

Looks AU but cant tell if the tie is seperated from the lapel.

Also, is it already TPG encapsulated? If not has the "S" been checked for counterfeit?

  • The tie appears to be seperate but its hard to tell. There is slight mint luster around the IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM but I could not get it with my camera. I dont have a macro lense so its hard to get enough light being so close to get these picts. The coin was found in circulation around 1950. This is from a set I bought from a lady whose father collected coins and passed away in the 80's. This has been in his collection since the 50's when it was found in circulation. I feel that she was telling the truth becuase I helped her with pricing some other coins that she had to sell and got to know her well during the day. She was very sad to see the coins go but needed the money more.

I did not see the slight luster until tonight. I guess I can always find new things if I looked at them more.

  • There does seem to be traces of luster (blue arrows). Hard to know exact amount of wear from the pic in order to determine 45,50,53 or 55. Personally, I think I can only rule out no lower than 45 based on the pic.

Regardless of grade or authenticity, it really looks to have two decent sized spots removed from the reverse; one just above the "N" of "ONE" and the other below the first "A" of "AMERICA".

AU-50 details. I'm a bit concerned about the two spots on the reverse which look worked-on.

I would sticker it at a 45. The TPGs would call it a 50 or 53, assuming that they ignore the spots on the reverse, which I think they will.

  • The example really helps. One can look at coin grading books and grade coins for years but its great to get input from collectors who have had alot more expereince than myself. My pictures really don't seem to do my coin as much justice as yours do. Some more playing around with the settings I guess.

You know, it's a damn shame. The camera I took that picture with was a little Nikon that died. I LOVED that camera. The camera I replaced it with sucks....another Nikon, different...supposedly better. I'm currently researching DSLRs.

  • I used a canon rebel xti with the regular 18-50mm lense. I really would love to get ahold of a 100mm macro lense but would rather buy coins. I always get into that predicament....buy better supplies or buy more coins.
