Long time collector, but I still don't know how VAM works, please help :)

I found this: http://www.bestcoin.com/Top-100-Morgan-Dollar-Varieties.htm

It explains what to look for nicely. (If you have a better site let me know!)

However, what really confuses me is:

1880-O | Overdate | VAM 4, 5 | "Crossbar" varieties. Both have similar variety feature. VAM 4 has Micro O & VAM 5 has Oval O mintmark. VAM 5 is scarcer.
1879-O | RPM | VAM 4, 28 | "O/Horizontal O" Mintmark. VAM 28 is a new discovery, which has a different Obverse with this same Reverse.

How can BOTH of these be VAM4?

Is there a better site?

Should I shell out the $24.95 for this book "The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys"

Or is there a better book?

I'm really interested in learning about the VAMs. Mainly because I like my Morgans and I want to start toying with VAM collecting as well since I'm nearing completion on my "basic set".

Thanks for all the help in advance!
