I had to share with everyone my latest purchase from today's Heritage Long Beach Signature Auction.
It definitely adds a lot to my collection !!

The diameter is about 33 mm .... (about the size of a US 50 cent piece) ... a nice large gold coin.
Weight is approx. 5.35 grams .. so coin is very thin.
According to my Delmonte reference book the mintage is estimated at 1,253,025 and listed on the rarity scale as "R" - not common.
It was made by hand hammering process over 625 years ago ....
something that purty and gold is likely to bring Doug out of hiding soon too

It takes some practice to recognize the stylized lion. That's one reason why I revisited this thread. I see it clearly and immediately now. At first, it was a "where's waldo" game.
Does anyone know much about the symbology of the devices on this item? What does the lettering say and what does it mean for example? What are the five letters on the non-lion side. Which side is the reverse and which side is the obverse? So many questions!
Very pretty. To think that it has probably been in the hands of collectors for 600 years now. Wow. I wonder what sort of things it was used for.

The letters you ask about are F L A N D - Flanders
The stylized lion has long been the symbol of the Netherlands and they struck many coins with various lion designs. The reverse is known as a voided composite floreate cross. This was one minted at Ghent, mintage was 1,558,025 and they were struck between February 10, 1365 and August 5, 1370.
