Green Mint Drop... Copper Guys/Gals Soak it or Leave it Alone?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is one of the finest 1841 Low-68 / HT-64 Mint Drops I have ever seen, a very under appreciated issue as it circulated heavily.

I bought it on the SPOT! (Pun Intended) image

Yet my eye is immediately drawn to the verdigris at noon on the rim. image

Should I try to soak it in mineral oil or the vaseline method or just leave her alone image

Thanks in advance! image

Aptly called a "cancer spot" - get rid of it before it metastasizes.

Looks like it's in the wreath, too. I would intervene or sell the token.

It's still on the surface... but I don't want to work this token with vaseline and a wooden tooth pic as it's high grade.

Yes just a touch in the wreath above the hair.

I added a better close-up image in the OP.

It is still active... yet it's not to the point of being ED that's eating into the surface.

I thought for a moment of sending it to NCS for conservation, but don't want it ruined! image

Thats a tuff one! Any route you take you will end up with a lighter tone once the "fungi" is removed. MS70 only on the spot needed, rinse, let dry. Repeat this untill "fungi" gives off a "dryed up" look. Use a plastic tooth pick to flake off the dried "fungi". Once "fungi" is removed to your satisfaction, darken the spot with sulfer vasiline. This will take allot of time so make sure theres plenty to eat and drink.

  • Acetone will also help to loosen it but comes the problem of getting the green rubbed of without leaving tail tail scratch marks image Also the acetone will tend to dry quick and leave a dry look to the coin.

Soak her for 1 hour in acetone (your spot will turn white) then put it in mineral oil for a while.

Yes, then a plastic toothpick (I use a modified one from a swiss army knife - very wide, flat, soft tip) should flick off any remaining crud easily.
