newp 1861 NGC AU55 Indian cent for my 1861 set opinions

image

Just picked this up sight unseen from JJ Teaparty's newest mailing. They had no pics, but I figured i could always return it.

I still need the 3 cent silver and the $1 Seated Liberty (Which I may never get)

So do you think it is a true au 55 that NGC gave it?

Maybe it's just the picture, but it doesn't appear to have the luster I'd like to see in a 55.

In AU grades for IHCs, I look at two main things: the amount of remaining luster and the detail in the diamonds.
  • I agree 55 is too high, but I think it's better than 45. I'd call it a nice 53.

55 seems about right. Luster on these tends towards the subdued. Nice coin!
  • I'd have to go 45.

Eagle Eye Rick - enlighten us with some comments, please.

I am in the 45-50 camp

Definitely not in the EF camp; there is not enough evidence of wear to indicate an EF grade.

    I would grade it XF45 to AU50.

I collected XF/AU Indian Cents for a decade and I can tell you that NGC is notorious for overgrading IHCs by 2-5 points. That being said, yours is a no doubt AU50 with nice color. The strike weakness on the feather tips you can't do much about...overall, not a bad coin.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

At one point I had some submissions to burn so I sent a lot of my better date IHCs to NGC. Here are the ones I sent to them as well as my grade and NGC's grade:

    1859: AU58/MS61
    1866: XF40/AU55
    1867: XF40/AU53
    1868: XF45/AU55
    1869: AU58/MS62
    1870: XF40/AU55
    1871: AU50/AU55
    1872: XF40/XF45
    1878: XF40/XF45

I think the 1859 and 1869 in particular are "market graded" because they are very nice for choice AU coins and probably worth low MS money.

These are all cracked out again and back in my Dansco. And yes I know how much "market value" I lost by cracking them out (and the 1877 I bought slabbed), but this is how I want to enjoy them. image

For what it's worth, I tend to lean more toward the Fly-In Club standards for grading and by those standards all of the services often overgrade these.

    45 unless there's some luster

    45 to 50. I want to see some luster on a 55.
