Hahahahahahaha. Those cards are hella sweet.
  • Guess thats a "would not do it"..............................
  • GAI graded cards should present no problem as Mike Baker is one of the best graders, if not the best, in the industry. I have a GAI graded
Ruth card and have no probs with it. Used to be a PSA 5 before PSA went to their half grades, and now a GAI 5.5 GAI is even tougher now
with their grades than they used to be. However, I prefer the old silver slips. I have had GAI 6 and rec'd PSA 6.5. I have had PSA 7 and rec'd GAI 8. Had GAI 7.5 and rec'd PSA 8. It's all over the place. Grades are only an OPINION not cut in stone as if they are the 10 commandments! PSA appears still to be the preferred company for graded cards and I prefer PSA over all others, however, I do have a few GAI cards. If someone is not confident nor agrees with grades of ANY of the grading companies, it's best to stay away. Scans do not show everything, and it's impossible to see how a card was cut in a scan. Measuring up is not the answer either as some
cards are smaller or larger even within an issue. This is MYOP only.

Incase your not understanding the humour here let me explain..

Months ago a guy had a nice collection of Vintage baseball which included a PSA 3 or 4 Ruth, all his cards were in PSA holders except the Ruth which was in a Global holder. Well he innocently decided that he wanted his collection to be uniform and sent his Ruth card into PSA as a crossover- the card didnt cross as it was not holdered due to either it not being authentic or wouldnt meet the minimum grade he had hoped to cross it to.

Long story short- he battled with everyones opinions here which were constructive and helpful suggestions, he lost his mind and got banned.

If your going to buy a Ruth I would stay away from Global and go with PSA or SGC. Best of luck either way.

That about sums it up. Heck I'd take BVG over GAI too.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Figures a bama fan would ask such a dumb question.
  • wasnt there a guy on this board that bought a trimmed GAI card, and sort of went nuts when he found out?

I dont want to appear out of line, if he really DID go nuts

I thought it was a few months ago, and I dont think I've seen his user I.D. around lately

I could be wrong and nuts myself

Yes, look 3 or so posts up..Perk mentions it. I believe it was Plifter

We have no idea if the plifter card was trimmed. only speculation.

What we do know is that PSA would not cross it at his min grade.

IMO the small pc of paper that was missing on the back was the cause.

    Good for you.
  • He did the same rant on the Net54 BB farum - got banned there as well.

I have had some better luck with their prewar crossing over. We had a GAI 3.5 T205 Cobb cross over to a straight SGC 40.

I had a friend crack a Goudey Ruth at the National and it bumped up a grade with PSA.

1st rule- you must crack Global holders out before submitting to PSA
Golden Rule- by the card and not the holder.

Agree with Marion on Mike Baker, you just have to be sure he graded it- things fall off a bit after him.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I would stay away from GAI, and buy a PSA orSGC graded one. They may be more expensive, but it would be alot safer

    What is the grade?

I wouldn't be affraid of buying a low grade ruth in a GAI holder.

A bad risk, very bad, in my opinion.
  • I have both GAI and PSA graded cards and don't see a lot of difference between the cards at a particular grade level. However, the perception is out there that both PSA and SGC are more accurate and reliable graders, at least for the moment. Presently, I'm submitting only to PSA for the simple reason that if I want to sell at some point in the future, I'll realize a greater profit with PSA than Global. I agree that you always "buy the card and not the holder". I would not be afraid to buy a GAI card if I can see it in person, but a scan can be iffy on any graded card, including PSA, BVG, etc.

Id have no problem if I could look at the card.... this goes with any higher grade (5 or above) vintage card slabbed by any grading company.

The higher the grade the higher the chance its trimmed, ......and that the biggest risk.

"Buy the card not the slab"

PS the Robinson is obviously trimmed on the top "bat wings" in corners are easy to see.
  • If you could grab one 10-15 percent below the lowest vcp sale I would do it. Then, when in hand, decide to crack, cross, or sell

I had no idea LSU fans were more jealous of us than Auburn fans? Guess i was wrong................ I do remember the guy who had the Ruth that didn't crossover.
