Holy smokes, that 30 dollars did pay off.........

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,279 ✭✭✭✭✭
Remember the post a few days ago about the Morgan I won for 30 bucks in some strange photo slab?

Here is the link to the auction.

30 dollar Morgan

Well the coin came today and boy was I suprised.

Here is the photo of the slab and coin.

image

Here is the obverse. What looks like a wipe across the cheek is on the slab.

image

And drum roll please..........the reverse. Why in the world, the seller did not show a photo of the reverse is beyond me. It alive with color, greens, blues etc.

image

Hit wise, the coin is probably a High end 64, maybe a 65 on a good day.

What do you think of her?

It could 65 with the color!

But, whatever the grade is it will always be a beautiful coin.

I see a latent print on the reverse that would be TOTALLY dismissed because of the magnificent (presumably natural) toning. In any event, I think you got more than your 30 bucks worth of coin.

Anyone know anything about the slabber? It appears to be one of photo slabbers from the 80's. Would you crack it or keep it in the current slab for posterity? My personal preference is to keep it in the slab it's in.

That is what I was going to recommend in my original reply. It's a widget date. Keep it in that plastic and enjoy it as long as the case isn't all scratched and smudged.

I have OCD and everything has to be in the same slab. If it does not make it in, out the door it goes.

Now in your situation with your photo insert type set, I'd probably keep it the way it is. If you go to sell it someday it might be worth more in a slab though.

I sent coins for grading to that company years ago.
After pcgs started I sent coins to them.
Then I didnt like that the slabs didnt match and couldnt go into the same size boxes so I cracked them all out and sent them to pcgs.

It is hard to tell from the pictures posted but is the original picture of the coin in the slab show it was toned when it was slabbed?

Nice piece, how did I miss that? Right up my alley. 4, shot at 5, with attractive toning, IMHO.

You can't go wrong for $30, yes it's a very common date, but the condition coupled with the color, gives it the appealing factor.

    Nice score.

The periferal toning is there in the pic as well. It's hard to tell if it may have darkened a tad bit. Do you happen to remember how the coins did at PCGS that you cracked out of these slabs?

What a coin for 30 bucks! I love it when those ebay gambles pay off! I'd leave it in its original slab if it doesn't bug you not to. Congrats on a great purchase.

Tres cool! I don't think it would grade 65 due to the strike, but it's definitely a keeper.
