Only 600 People Show Up For Marlins Game

Apparently 11,000 tickets sold but only 600 or so braved the sweltering heat...

I once pitched in a high school game that was better attended.

In 1977 I went to an (Oakland0 A's game where the offical crowd count was 787.

    Sad.
  • Sure ups your chances for a homerun or foul ball.

Believe it or not, the lowest attendance for a major league game is "23". The Yankees of all teams played the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916 in front of 23 people.

There were more players than fans!!

Ya know, that's VERY true! I bet you could actually walk away with more than one ball at a game like that.

That would make the used tickets relatively scarce.

Even the Rays while not drawing like they should have more than that!

    dynamic.

so much for fancy schmancy stadium, nice championships & beloved, die-hard fans.

try building the stadium in a small, city neighborhood w/ only street parking & sell lots of 3-deep beer cups.

It can be done in the small cities. We completely rebuilt our stadium (in Wichita, Kansas) lost our AAA team (several Texas League championships), got a crappy A team (finished last), and somehow pulled record box offices.

I think the bigger problem, is if you are in Miami or someplace like that, paying on two old stadiums, wanting (maybe even needing) a new one type situation, which I imagine several big cities fall into.

There is a bright side in this. The mascot got a lot of time to spend with the 8 kids there.

  • This is why the state of Florida does not need two baseball teams... the Rays have one of the best records in baseball but they can't even draw. One or both teams probably should move.

  • Heh, our low A-Ball team, the Lansing Lugnuts, rarely has under 600 fans at a game. I hesitate to say never, but I go to Monday/Tuesday games and I haven't ever been to one with attendance below 1,000.

What was Marlins leadership thinking? Florida is HOT. Florida is HUMID. Dolphin Stadium is open air. It can be 95 degrees and sunny one moment, then the same 95 and raining the next. Who wants to endure that?!

They sold 11,000 tickets to that game. They made some money. But only 600 showed up. It is so uncomfortable in Dolphin Stadium that fans that paid $20 to $50 per ticket would rather stay home and forfeit their money.

Throw a roof and some a/c on that thing! Arizona's leadership knew they needed a roof and a/c, and they're doing just dandy!

That's where I got a foul ball a couple of years ago. I walked to where the ball landed and picked it up. I think the batter was already out by the time I got there. True, it's just sad.

  • I don't wanna here about the summer, and the weather. Stockton and Fresno have teams that draw that in single a, and it's hot as ass in the summer. The rivercats in Sacramento at triple a clear that.

Hell, Stockton AA Hockey draws 6000 a night in an area where nobody grew up with or has even played the game.

Sad for the true Florida fans. That team has won two world series in recent memory, and can only draw that. With what the Marlins drew, and the numbers the Rays are putting up (despite having one of the best teams in baseball), I hope ownership or MLB dictates a move to somewhere they can draw more than AAA crowds.

  • I've felt Southern California summers at their worst... they're bad, but Florida (especially Miami) is 10x worse... you can feel the moisture and ick in the air clinging to you... and if there's a breeze, it feels like your uncle's breath after-dinner...

The last time I went to Florida, I found myself seeking out places with a/c when we were out. I've gotta think it's better in the late-fall and winter, but summer is cruel, cruel, cruel down there. If I had kids, I'd be scared to have them out in that for 3-4 straight hours. Give fans a roof and some a/c and I guarantee you won't see a 600-fan game again.

  • Florida should have remained exclusive to spring training

The story behind the 23 in attendence was that the game started and ended before the scheduled start. I think the road team needed to stick to a train schedule so they played nine quick innings and left and no one who would have gone to watch could have known

I was watching this game on sportsouth and there were a few foul balls that no one could find. I remember one went into the lower deck on the 1st base side and there were three guys they kept showing looking for it and I dont believe they ever found it

  • Pretty sad. During Marlins game times, they should black-out South Beach.
  • Dolphins Stadium is the reason we became Rays fans and not Marlins fans. Rain outs occur too often, and it's hot as heck down there. Both stadiums are roughly the same distance from us (2 1/2 hours) so that didn't play a role either. We went to the NLCS and WS down there in '03 for the heck of it as well as a few Braves games every now and then, but that's about it.

They're also about to get absolutely WHACKED by Hurricane Ike, so keep your fingers crossed for all of us along the coast.
