Clad collectors: How many pre 1990 OBW rolls of clads have you found, bought and/or sold sold since

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 13,304 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you have do so, what year(s), mintmark(s), and denomination(s) were the rolls and how did you when you resold the rolls?

I am curious about just how common or uncommon an experience finding/buying and selling these clad rolls has been for our forumites.

Oh yeah. For me. Zilch, though I saw a rolls of MS 1983P Quarters at a Santa Clara show some years ago. The dealer wanted $1,100.00 for the roll. However the roll was not OBW with crimped ends. It looked like a paper roll that you found at banks that was filled.

    Let's see.

I've been actively looking though many of these rolls are such poor quality
that they really don't interest me.

    What I can remember are;

    Dimes.
    2- '65
    1- '66
    1- '69-D
    20- '77 to 80-P and D
    1- '83-P
    40 misc late '80's to mid-'90's.

    Quarters.
    a few '65
    1- '67
    1- '68
    1- '69-D
    2- '70-D
    1- '74
    50- '77 to '81 P&D
    1- '83
    40 misc later dates
    countless '76 P & D

I just glance at Ikes and Halfs usually but no longer see many
Ikes. The halfs are out there though they aren't really common
and some dates might be quite scarce.

I've also seen hundreds of assembled rolls and every single one
that I've examined has been from mint sets.

It is quite rare to see OBW advertised for sale as well. Arlan Kra-
mer and the other seller probably still have some of these for the
    later dates.

Disregarding current coin, I'll bet I haven't seen 300 clad quarter
(OBW) rolls all together. Of those I've been able to check or spot
check and this includes thousands of current rolls fewer than 10%
of the older dates and 40% of the more recent dates have nice
    coins.

It's this dearth of OBW rolls which will assure that many clads are
scarce and rare in uncirculated condition.

I'd be interested in hearing about any rolls I missed so...

    Cladking.

I suspected that you might reply to my OP, but do not expect many others to provide any substantive reply. Heck I would even enjoy seeing some replies that echo my own experience of finding no OBW pre 1990 clad rolls.

I started accumulating OBW silver rolls a few years ago, and since then I've started to branch out into some of the early clad rolls.

A high percentage of the early clad rolls that I've bought off ebay as OBW are probably not OBW - but it is difficult to know for sure, unless the wrapping technology changed on or around 1965 - and I don't recall that being the case. In my thinking, the ends of an OBW 1964 roll ought to be very comparable to the ends of an OBW 1965 roll.

I did just buy a roll of 1967 Quarters that I believe to be original, based upon the end coins and the wrapper. I've bought some other mid to late 1960's clad rolls that are probably not original, even though they were sold as OBW.

I say this because examining the ends of known original silver rolls can give a good idea of what an original clad roll end should look like. Most of the questionable rolls have ends that are just too tight - and in some cases the recent crimp job is obvious in terms of the style of wrapper and the paper itself.

I've had some luck with OBW rolls of 40% Kennedys, including 1965-P, 1967-P, 1968-D and 1969-D. My degree of confidence on these rolls is high, but the quality may not be so great. I inspected one double roll of the 1967-Ps, and they were very ordinary or worse.

I remember that some of the wrapping paper and technology began to change in the mid-1970s as the older "kraft-style" paper was phased out. I would love to see firsthand a nice collection of certifiable OBW clad rolls, mainly to document the type of wrapping.

I used to buy multiple BU rolls every year from Arlan Kramer, but none of them were OBW. I tapered off after the number of rolls became cumbersome, but now I've got a stash of spending money if the economy deflates.image

The only OBW Clad rolls I've ever seen have been Kennedy Halves. Zippo for quarters!

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I hope my last post wasn't too misleading.

I'm defining OBW (original bank wrapped) as any roll which is obviously
rolled randomly from an original bag or hopper fed by bags. "Random"
can rarely be positively known but it's usually apparent.

The practice of rolling quarters in orange paper and stamping the bank's
identification on it was already falling by the wayside by 1965. It was
still occurring as late as around 1990 probably but these are simply rarely
seen for clads as you well know.

I'm counting even some rolls wrapped in plastic though this is a relatively
new development. I'd even count a tube roll if it looked like it came from
a bag but these are mint set coins in nearly all cases.

There are very few true OBW rolls of clad quarters in existence. I doubt
I have more than four or five and these came from local banks long before
    1990.

I've bought and searched many over the years. I've probably had most dates for dimes and quarters from 1965 to 1983 plus a few later 80's. I bought an OBW 83-p quarter roll for $1050 saved by the dealer himself since 1983 (he had all of 1965-1986 saved since the year of issue). I opened and searched it but found nothing worthy to go to pcgs. I resold it for $750. I've had maybe 10 different dates of OBW clad Kennedy rolls, and a whold bunch of 79-d ones.

Back in the day I bought and kept a roll of quarters because they were all new any shiny. The year was 1982... if only it had been '83!

I've got a OBW roll of Bicentennial Quarters that I got from an old collection. Other than that, I don't come across pre-90's OBW rolls hardly anywhere, other than 70's Cents.

I suspect there just isn't many out there to be had.
