need grading opinion on 1864 CN IHC....

I know it's only one side, but what is your opinion of grade?

also, any advice on how to safely clean the 'grime' on the coin.

    looks like it used to be a slider/low MS before the ugly stick hit it. hard.

    i hope i am not that far off. looks to have a lot of detail left.
    a 40 grade i would expect very obvious wear.

    Nice coin, but as you already suspect it's a BB the way it is. Have you considered sending it to NCS?

    I had a piece with nicer surfaces but just a tiny bit more headband/feather rub in a PCGS AU53 holder once. And mine was the more-common 1863.

    Nice coin, if a bit dirty. I would give that one the Vaseline or mineral oil treatment and try to gently remove the crud. It looks as though it might be loose enough stuff to come off. If such a "cleaning" would remove the gunk and leave the coin's color unchanged, it would be a nice piece. It doesn't really look like corrosion to me- just dirt. Grime, like you said. And therefore it should be easily treatable, if that is the case.

    Edited to add: I did the Vaseline treatment on this one which was quite grimy when I found it. (The grime was in my favor because it hid that all-important mintmark.) It graded, no problem.

    Acetone ain't a bad idea, either. I thought of mentioning that, too.

    Looks like EF/AU. If the crud isn't hard verdigris, I always try denatured alcohol first. It won't affect color and is a little safer to work with than acetone.
