one day back in the early 90's me & my dad went to a dudes moving sale, he had a closet full of baseball cards and he made a deal on the whole lot for me, and my dad agreed to buy them for me because he was starting to see there was money in cards (he always griped at me before, like how the hell could i spend a $10 bill on a piece of cardboard--specifically a '86 donruss canseco--he saw me sell it later for $75 and he started getting interested in cards..lol)

anyway, dude sold me the closet full of baseball cards and was loading them into a big box for me to take to the car and he says "wait a second, ive got a couple other albums on a shelf in here and you can have them too" -- he comes back with just 1 800 count box and says "i was wrong, i just have these basketball cards, take them with you too" -- i peaked inside and almost crapped myself, i saw it was 86 fleer but didnt want to act too excited about it, so i waited until i got home and sorted out 3 friggin sets of 86 fleer and a few duplicates (3 jordans total).. i ended up selling all 3 jordans to some dude at a garage sale we had a few months later, i think i got like $120 each for them..

The angel on one shouder is wanting me to say - "Awesome find! Congratulations. I've had my share of decent finds, and I am glad someone else can get in on some good fortune. I am very happy for you."

The little devil on the other shoulder is wanting me to say - "You sorry, good for nothing sucker! I hate your stinkin' guts! I hope every card in that Fleer box is O/C. I also hope that it has been resealed and you don't get one single Jordan out of it!"

    image

In all seriousness - great find. That is something you will never, ever forget. For that matter, I don't think I'll ever forget it!

You've got to tell us how you felt when you saw them and when you paid him. Was you able to keep your composure? I would have been shaking like a leaf when I got back in the car.

I was thinking about this all night. Why did he post just one pic, one pic that included those garbage packs and the topps box? If he found them at a garage sale after work, why did he post the pic and the message at 10:30?

I just want to see more pics, then I'll believe it.

Congrats! And for all you doubting Thomases, all I can say is that these finds are out there!

Here's a previous post of mine about a similar experience I had with a "garage sale":

"In 1975, my wife, 2 sons and I, drove to Florida to see her relatives.

On the way, we stopped for gas in North Carolina. While I was pumping gas, my oldest son said "hey dad, look at that sign". There was a sign across the highway that said "bazeball cardz 4 sale".

With enough help from my 2 sons, we convinced my wife to let us at least check 'em out.

So, we drove down what seemed to be an endless country gravel driveway, and saw a little old lady wearing a sweater (it had to be at least 90 degrees that day!) rocking in a chair on her porch.

I asked her about the baseball cards and she laughed and said they're in the shed around back.

We followed her and she led us to a 2' x 2' old chest-like wooden box. She said she was 85 years old and had no use for the things. Her husband and his friends used to open their packs of tobacco and pick their teeth with the corners of the cards and then throw the cards in the box.

She said "you can have them all for $5.00 plus the chest."

I opened the box and it was filled 3/4 of the way with T206s.

Of course I had no idea what T206s were worth then, so I agreed and paid the lady.

Those T206s were converted to 5 1952 Topps Mantles back in 1992.

I've never been to a "garage sale" or should I say "shed sale" since."

  • No way man, WOOOOOOOW!!!

Congradulations on that one in a billion find image

The best way to go about it is get every single pack slabbed and then sell them. If you start ripping them your gona lose out. Sure you only paid $10 but thats not the point. Of course everybody dreams of pulling a Jordan and others in a PSA 10 but you know the odds of that.

Good luck no matter what you deceide!

  • I have seen garage sales everyday of the week, we got 8 in the local paper for today 2 were running yesterday as well.

It would not shock me to find something like that at a yard sale, but this one makes me say hmmmm
  • RogermnjRogermnj Posts: 1,809 ✭✭
OK OK this thread was a joke..

I DID buy this box yesterday but paid "slightly" more than $10.00

Hope you guys had some fun with it. Just meant to be one of those "can you imagine how cool that would be" threads...
