When's the next group rip????

It's been like a two weeks since we've had a BBCE group rip. When are we doing another? I didn't get much of anything, so I'm jonesin' for something. Bought a box of A&G at Wal-Mart over the weekend, but that didn't quench the thirst.

  • Not sure LSU is going to do another one. I doubt I will myself.

the last 83 Topps Box was complete garbage. I'll consider another rip but it's gotta be something really fun.
  • seems like the quality just isnt there for the high price.

Well, there's always fun boxes to rip like 84 Donruss that are pretty cheap. 82 Topps baseball wax is a decent price even though the probability of poor centering and print defects still exists. 81 Fleer baseball..... I can still remember the smell of them as I opened box after box. I think they ran like $9- $10 a box back then... and they had a different smell than the Topps cards I was used to. Not a valuable set, but still neat and cheap...even by the box. I'm sure you've done it in previous rips, but 86 Topps football wasn't a bad price. 84 Topps football went over pretty decent last time as well, from what I can remember.
Heck, I might even be willing to set one up with a little direction!

I would love to do a 86 topps football break.
  • Anybody doing any Basketball group rip?

    1975-1979 baseball I'm in.

I don't collect FB, but I'd do a few packs of that too.

75-79 FB and BB rip, sounds fun.

The 78 rip was good. I'd be in on that one. I've also added 78's to my other orders and those 78 packs have been good too.
  • Not that I plan on participating, but the last 78 baseball were in great condition. I still have a Pete Rose that has a shot at a 10 that hasn't yet made it's way to PSA.

You very strongly defended BBCE when I merely suggested that the 89 UD boxes MIGHT have been searched, so obviously you trust them and their products. I'm just curious...why are you not wanting to participate in another rip?
  • Because I live in America and I have the right to participate, or not, if I choose.

I would be in for baseball packs, not full boxes, from 1976-1983.

    Thanks,

  • How about a box of 1986 Topps baeball? Would only be like $0.40 a pack.

Don't you have a case sitting at home? image
  • I passed the rip before the last and got a box of UD the last rip. When opening these old boxes and packs it is a total crapshoot. If you want to find a particular card you are beter off just buying it in PSA 8 or 9 form then wasting money on a rip and geting upset when you don't get what you are looking for.

That being said, if the material is right I will be in for another rip, though I would perfer to stay away from cards in the 1980s since the cost/payoff ratio is just not there.

Well, I'd at least be willing to get in touch with Steve to see if he is willing to let us do another and what he can get us in the 70's. Did I gather that nobody would be interested in 84 Donruss?? Usually get pretty high quality cards with this series and the price per pack is good. I'll also check on some football and basketball.

    My thoughts -

    72 FB
    77 FB
    84 FB
    78 or 79 or 81 Topps Baseball
    84 Donruss Baseball

    "Molon Labe"

  • I am DEFINATELY in on 84T or 89Score football. Please some me some spots, because I was shut out on the last 2 rips since I do not check the site everyday. It seems like 4-6 guys sign up and a box is sold out. How about placing a limit for 1-2 days, ....

I'm definitely in for '70s Topps stuff. '84 Donruss is always fun. '80 Topps is fun.

I'm one of the ones you are referring about, yes I bought multiple packs of the FB, but had you asked you could have had some of them. I also bought out the remaining Basketball so the rip could get going. What limit do think would be fair?

Sad to say but talk is cheap, people say they want in the rips but when time comes to do it, they don;t sign up for the rips.

I'd be interested in 84 Donruss or 89 Score Football or anything from the 70s. Or whatever.

I've never set one up, but I'll call if no one wants the gig.

I say: 84 Donruss BB, 78 Topps BB, 86 Topps FB

If anyone has suggestions post em (if you don't like my selections, post yours) and I'll check the thread after Golf tonight. If anyone wants to take the lead, post that and you can be in charge. We'll kinda tally the votes and I can call tommorrow for the particulars, or we can drop the whole thing and spend the dough on labor day hooch.

I'm broke - but 81 Topps BB is a fun rip and is less than $100.

I am not going through the same BS again. Mainly tired of getting stuck with packs that people do not pay for. It might be wise to email Steve to make sure he is even willing to do it again.
  • I'd be in for a few more packs of 89 Score Football. I agree with lsutigers1973 about contacting Steve Hart first though. He may not want to do another huge CU rip again. Seems like the last one had some issues.

  • jswietonjswieton Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭
Everytime I try calling I get his voicemail.
  • VitoCo1972VitoCo1972 Posts: 6,135 ✭✭✭
He's pretty quick at getting back to emails

  • << <i>Seems like the last one had some issues. >>

When people commit to packs/boxes then do not pay, it usually causes headaches for Steve. Then we have people that can not follow simple instructions and send a payment with nothing in the message regarding CU user name or what they are paying for, it adds more work for Steve. Then we always have people, I was guilty of this last time, that complain about the possibility of packs or boxes being searched. We all know that opening any wax pack, regardless of age, is a gamble. About 90% of the time the value of any pack is usually higher before being opened than it is after being busted. Being questioned regarding some of the 89 UD boxes really pissed him off last time. I didn't help matters by questioning the 83 Topps box I bought. For those that asked me recently, the reason I will not be participating or at least to a lessor degree this time is mainly for financial reasons. It is not because of the results of the last rip. Prior rips, I have more than got my moneys worth. I would probably be in for a few packs but not near as many as the last few times.
  • Is this group rip done by youtube video?

I wouldn't mind getting into an expensive group box break image

  • I think Steve really needs to get some tougher skin... I don't think anyone (that I recall) has ever called him out or accused him of anything... Most of the stuff was just speculation and conjecture. Everyone likes to dream up conspiracy theories. But we are all grown men and know what happens 95% of the time we rip anything.

My box of 89 UD sucked I got nothing more than a Bonds card - Never did I accuse him of anything, I did come on the boards an whine - but that was more to commiserate with fellow collectors who have gotten the bad box/pack from time to time.

I think Steve should be thanking people like LSU for organizing group breaks - how much easy money has the last few rips generated for BBCE, I know it can get confusing but it was some easy sales.

Ping - I think he is talking about the cheaper and more popular packs like the 89 Score football.

  • It is possible that boxes could have been searched and there's no way of knowing how many people had their hands on the boxes before Steve took ownership. It is part of the gamble of doing these rips. As knowledgable as Steve is, expecting him to be 100% sure his materials are unsearched is expecting a lot. He assumes he's correct when he sells packs and boxes, but the only thing we can be sure of is Steve hasn't searched them.
Other than that, Steve has a degree of certainity that what he sells is unsearched and we're spending our money in the hopes he's correct.
In some rips, I've hit a homerun and others just a weak dribbler back to the pitcher, but they're all fun!!

    edited for spelling errors.

i didn't do the last rip but i did the 2 before, didn't get anything great but was happy with them , it was fun

i think when you rip like this there is always a chance of not getting anything but that's the risk you run.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • I guess we forget that we are only ripping these packs in hopes of getting a PSA 10 of whatever rookies or HOF'ers may be in the pack so we can make a nice profit and keep the rest as free bonus cards.

All the more reason to rip packs with the most low-pop commons...which is why I like 81 Topps.

Bill, did you get my PM re: 91 Fleer?
  • Yes I did Mike, but honestly I forgot about it. My bad. I will go check right now.

Back when I first signed up and started posting on the boards, I participated in Gary's Late 70's Early 80's Baseball group rip. I just looked at BBCE to see if we could do something similar, but with (more likely) legit packs. Here's what I found:

    1977 OPC Box - $575
    1978 Topps Box - $575
    1979 Topps Box - $360
    1980 Topps Box - $300
    1981 Donruss Box - $45
    1981 Fleer Box - $40
    1981 Topps Box - $90
    1982 Donruss Box - $75
    1982 Fleer Box - $75
    1982 Topps Box - $135
    1983 Donruss Box - $75
    1983 Fleer Box - $75
    1983 Topps Box - $135
    1984 Donruss Box - $190
    1984 Fleer Box - $75
    1984 Topps Box - $50
    1985 Donruss Box - $95
    1985 Fleer Box - $150
    1985 Topps Box - $135

Each of those boxes have 36 packs (except 83 Fleer which has 38). If we get 36 people to get in on a group rip, we would each get 19 packs, one from each box, and it would be $90.28 plus shipping per person, based on the price on his site. I would imagine that Steve would cut us a break on the price, so it would easily be less than $100 per person. Is anyone interested in something like this? Just throwing another option out there...
