Maui Trade dollars

I was in Maui the last couple of weeks and bought a whole set of Maui trade dollars (17). They have been minted every year since 1992. Mainly ocean animals with the 2008 a Hula dancer, size of silver dollars. Have them in silver and proofs. Nice set I will be getting them every year from now on. Does anyone else collect them mintages are around 120,000 a year I think. I will post pics when I get them set up.

My brother brought me one or two back from Hawaii a few years ago. I don't think they are worth much. Really just tokens.

I have the one from 2001, with the whale on it. A friend of my youngest son brought it back for me. They're pretty cool! image

I have two of them - one with a humuhumunukunukuapua'a, and the other with a Ne Ne Goose. They are pretty.

I saw them when I was in Maui recently and was going to buy them all...until I found out that they didn't contain any precious metals and I lost interest. Too expensive and made of cheap a$$ metals. I liked the designs though.

Just got back from the Kea Lani myself and was too overloaded with dashboard hula girls and pineapples to fit anymore junk in the luggage. Sorry I missed those image

The series actually started in 1973 per Cote's 1990 edition
of US Municiple Trade Dollars. I have two issues not listed
by Cote. Early mintages were all over the board ranging from
    500 to 52,000.

Maui issued trade dollars in 1959 for statehood as well.

There are other series of dollars for "Hawaii", "Hilo", and
"Honolulu". Most of all these are surprisingly difficult to find
considering the large mintages and presumed sale to tourists.

Most of the Hawaii coins are copper or bronze and have denominations
while the doubloons are mostly aluminum and purely commemorative.

    There are similarities though.

i have the modern set sans 2008, will pick up 08 and 09 next year.

they are okay if your are in love with Maui, the minting process isn't that great but then neither are Ike's.....

it's not the only reason i go back to Maui..lol...i dance with death on Big Beach hoping for big swells from the southwest, yet Lahaina/Kaanapali area can't be beat.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

when I was on my honeymoon I saw them and bought a few cupro nickel ones for sovs for my nephs
If you look around, you can find the most of the series in .999 silver (issued from same fund-raising source)! I actually had about 8 at one time and sold them on Ebay when I realized I didn't have the energy to persue the complete series.

even from the original chamber of commerce authorized source, Im not sure that it's possible to finish a set easily because of the hard to find silver years. If you look, there's an ebay seller who sells them from hawaii. if you PM him, he's got a full price list for all the official issues.
