Thanks

Looks like the PSA 8 is trimmed along the bottom.

The PSA 8 one is shorter t/b. It might just be the cut though. I've got a number of mid grade commons from that set, and they're all different sizes. Get a loupe and see if the cut paterns along the edges match up.

Looks fine to me too. Chipping like that is common on '73's. The card stock is terrible. Why don't you just measure the card in the psa holder? Maybe your non-slabbed card is oversized.

If you compare the length of the non-PSA card on the left, to the PSA holder, you'll notice that the non-holdered card is too long to even fit in the PSA holder. The card is therefore, obviously oversized.

I do remember from handling many '73 Topps cards, that there did seem to be a large size differential that year. Apparently, Topps had difficulty cutting the cards to the normal dimensions in '73.

    Edited to add:

There also seem to be an inordinate amount of O-Pee-Chee-like rough-cuts in the '73 Topps set. Either Topps used an inferior card stock that year, or they went to the O-Pee-Chee method of cutting.

  • Well, since you're asking, the PSA graded one does have 3 rough cut/normal edges, and one appears to be more sharp/clean than the others. How does a card get 3 rought cut edges, and one smooth one? After seeing this, I would love to inspect that card in person. It certainly has me curious..
  • Can you post a scan of the top edge where it says 1973 rookie third basemen? Maybe tap the card down in the holder so the top edge is clearly seen without the PSA holder's lip obstructing any of that edge?
