The Star Designation............

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,106 ✭✭✭✭✭
The post earlier today got me thinking about coins with the "coveted" star designations. Let's see your stars. I only have one, and believe it deserved it, that's why I submitted it. Here it is raw and in the slab.

Well, if that crescent toner has a star designation, I can now see how the one in yesterday's thread...the ebay auction...also has one. I couldn't see it before.

I really like the "toning shadow" that occurs radially in the fields just outside of the devices. I do not have such a wonderous coin and someday want one to gawk at under strong lighting.

    Very nice. Thanks for sharing!

I hope to photographically share a similarly annointed coin tonight. An 1849 gold eagle with lots of character and a green football.

This is my only one. I've never "made" one because I've never submitted coins to any TPG.

I can't speak for the one in the original post. From the photos it appears to be lacking a true rainbow spectrum. My coin has a true rainbow and blazing luster to go along with it. I think the combination of these two factors is what got this coin the star.

me? i wonder why the star designation only seems to get used
on coins that have superior corrosion and tarnish on them...
while nice looking coins that are exceptional for the grade, like
    gold, go starless.

is there a reason for this?

    Scott,
    OK, I'll stop, promise! image

Yours should have easily been RB. Very pretty neon. I love those colors on these late 50's Lincolns.

How does one "narrowly" miss it? They give you a "-" instead of a "*"?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I believe they only give the star for MS 60 and above.

That's a shame. I have some stunners compared to most of the dipped out washed, cleaned and ugly ones.
