"Live" auction support has a long way to go

Okay, I bid on a coin at Stack's tonight. Strong bids on the coin before the auction......watched it "live", ready to deliver a final bid or two if need be. Coin bid gets to $1500 of my bid (lower) ....5 seconds to auction end.....done. I've won. No wait...I haven't won. Coin went for a bid higher than mine. Lesson learned, that real time display of prices are still a long ways away. Somewhere, this went up 4 bid increments and I never saw info ping an update. Oh well...lesson learned one more time.....floor bidders still have a huge advantage.

That's one of the reasons I just put in my max, if that gets beat someone wanted it more than me. I have been succesful in a couple of the Heritage Live auctions though. There were two cases where I dind't put in bids when I first looked at the coins, then went back online the night of the aution and won a couple.

Just out of curiosity, would you have bid up to your maximum online prior to the sale had they not offered "real-time" (or whatever these techies call it) bidding? Personally, as a potential consignor, I would not want my coins auctioned in this manner. Too many things can go wrong. Your service could go down, the internet service at the hotel where the auction is could go down, there could be too much internet traffic, your web browser could shoot craps, there could be that ping problem you mentioned. With that many coins, you would have to image that there are only a handful of really interested bidders on each lot. If just one of those interested bidders where to have a problem, the price for that lot could be way less. Sometimes I think these auction houses go overboard with all these fancy bells and whistles.

Have not dealt with Stacks live but have had good luck with Heritage Live. I forgot to place an early bid and was forced to go live and it worked great.
