PCGS grading of circulated coins

I have read the thread about the grading of proof Jefferson coins by Keets. Great job by all who participated. My question is do you feel that circulated coins are easier to grade, by that I mean is there more of a concensus on the grading of circulated coins between grading companies, and secondly do you feel more comfortable grading circulated coins versus uncirculated.

I think circulated coins are easier to grade.

In mint state category there are 10 points ( MS 60 to MS 70). That makes it tougher to split hairs in that category.

Not so in the circulated grades.

I think my biggest gripe would be a coin that comes back ms 58 that should be MS 63. I think that is just a brain trust in their grading and not fully knowing the series. On circulated grades, I think they do a fine job most times............Rick

  • Yes, easier for me to grade circulated coins and the grading companies are more accurate. Still not near perfect, but more accurate. You have to watch out for those silent "net" grade coins, though.

i think pcgs does a fine job grading circ coins -- the only issue is when they parse the grading down to intermediate grades, say, vf25 or au53 -- obviously you're in the ballpark but the few points either way can sometimes seem arbitrary.

    i for one find it difficult to tell a 25 from a 20 or a 53 from a 55. but i can pretty well almost always accurately tell a 12 from a 20 or a 40 from a 50.
