I picked up some mint sets yesterday and found this... Thoughts on the grade and will it go Full Steps?

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • MS65 5FS...shot 665FS...reverse looks very clean for a 66 but the obverse looks like a tweener to me 65/66
  • 65FS from the pics.

    FS yes,

but no way is that coin a 66

looks like a 65, next choice would be a very strict 64.

(by the way, I'm no Jefferson expert).

  • that planchet is way too rough to make even a 64, especially the reverse. could be a pcgs full steps, though it looks like a nick thru the 5th step under the 3rd column and some marks thru the steps between the 1st and 2nd columns, which would keep it from full steps designation. very rare coin in fs, so whatever the grade, it's a great coin.
  • 64 possible 65 , big price difference in the two..........

nice steps , look FS from picture . there are nine different d/s varieties , yours looks to have something going on in the middle of the D , though it does not appear to be variety 1 .

Nice toning , love that look on a Jefferson...........

I'd say a 63 or 64 with a good possibility of Full steps.

I agree, just too beat up, maybe a 63, as for full step's.... it could be.

MS64, no full steps. Here's why:

MS64: big nick on the lapel on the obverse, plus that carbon spot on the shoulder. Two horizontal nicks on the reverse under the T in MONTICELLO.

non-FS: I see a bridge under the second column between steps 3 and 4, that's the spot where a lot of FS nickels go to die.

very nice... for the date it is terrific. I think 64FS is likely but 65 is quite possible. I would send it in.

edited to add: The field between Monticello and Five Cents is my issue and perhaps is the difference between 64 and 65 and FS, in my view, is appropriate

MadMarty, I say 64FS. Too much chatter on reverse to garner a 65. Nice find! Shag

I like the strike!! Lots of planchet noise and dings though. Not sure it would go 65.

I'm thinking the same thing. Tough date though.

Here are pics of my MS65 non-FS 55-D; based on the comparison of the fields yours is a 64. As for FS, it might just make it. Although, with your history, they might see the chatter in the fields and give you a 58.

MS 64, Hard to tell by the pictures about the steps. Looks like a bridge in the 4th step, but might get a FS from PCGS.

    ms-65/fs
  • I agree with the MS-64 crowd. I think the obverse is too beat up to go any higher.

I would guess a ms65 and there seems to be a break in the steps above the "c". May not qualify for FS but it is an attractive nickel.

as i said in the PM, Marty, MS63 no FS due to the gouge interrupting step five under the third pillar. PCGS likes you, though, so it may be awarded a grade of MS65FS. i gave up on the MS Jeffersons over two years ago because they exhibit absolutely nothing close to consistent attribution regarding the designation, awarding it to coins with Leo's "pushed metal" syndrome and interrupted step lines.

I'll have to chime in with MS63FS although it wouldn't suprise me to see it in a 64 holder
