  The history of the coin is essentially that Morgan was trying to improve on his design of the previous year.

  Why the traditional Morgan design was chosen over that one is beyond me. The reverse eagle especially is hands down a nicer design that the eagle on the Morgan. Were there striking issues with this design? Does anyone know why it was not adopted?

  Morgan's young head of Liberty did not exist when the design for the standard dollar was selected. The adopted obverse dates from 1876 and was brought to the US by Morgan in October of that year.
