More 'economy' 7070 newps

adamlaneusadamlaneus Posts: 6,969 ✭✭✭
I know these coins don't measure up to most of the new purchase threads, for most of those threads are about very nice high end coins.

Here is a handful of relatively inexpensive new purchases for my 7070.

Move the lighting just a little bit and the coin catches it very differently. I've never seen one of these Oregon Commemoratives up close and personal. It is a very high relief design!

    Nice coins, especially that Oregon.

I don't collect commems but that Oregon and Vermont both look nice.
  • I also think that both of the commems are nice, and admire the fact that you have the gold page. Congrats on the new pick-ups.

    Very lovely looking coins. image

Next time, don't be so pessimistic about the coins you show.
I know that some of us don't even have these in our collections image

    That Oregon Trail is sweeet.

And the others are perfectly respectable.

I saw your dirty French goldie over on the Darkside. I used to have a few of those.

You only say that because my scanner died and I can't pull quick pictures of my own new purchases any more. The stuff I have in my 7070 so far makes your set look like Louis Eliasberg's.

What's to be embarrassed about? I'd be proud to have any one of those coins in my set. That's a sweet no-drapery half dime. Good job going one step beyond the general type the Dansco has a hole for.

I agree, those are great looking coins. You should see some of the truly crappy coins I've posted for my 7070. image

It's just that with all of these threads talking about quality over quantity. Coin doctoring and non original surfaces. AT. Threads with MS-65+ lookers...

It's intimidating. Some of these items; well, I could have waited longer for a nicer item to come by. But I also have a certain amount of time in mind and a certain budget in mind, and i'm not adverse to upgrades. It seems that these sorts of compromises are rarely talked about on this forum. In fact, it's easy to buy the wrong coins. I feel that I have in some cases, but that comes mostly from this forum. I think that may be a good thing; my bar is going up as far as quality.

These coins represent compromises and i'm generally happy with them. I'm going for a fairly broad look with this album and having a great deal of fun. I hope to spend time this weekend getting better photos.

I wish that quarter had a little hole where the ear is. I've seen such nice examples on this board.

The reverse of the dime is sort of mashed. Nice detailed obverse, but the reverse...well, you'll see later.

Anyway, thanks so much for the compliments! I've got a few more coming in soon. Large cents!

Gonna put that '32 half dime in the 7070?

    Nice coins and nice pictures.
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!

That half dime seems to warrant careful treatment. I hesitate to put it into the 7070 although I suspect it would not get damaged there.

I'm not sure what to do. It's not the most expensive coin in my type collection, but I seem to want to give it more respect as if it were more valuable.

I viciously cracked out two gold dollar coins and put them in my Dansco without thinking twice about it.

For now, it sits in its original flip, which has a piece of paper in it saying something like "warning - not for long term storage!"

Russ would have been delighted to know it was residing in someone's album. Just make sure to keep the auction slips, never lose those. The 1832 half dime in my LOC album is a Reiver coin and I like to think Jules is smiling down from above at it being in there.
  • I'm with you adam. I am in the process of putting together a 7070 as well. Mine is quite the economy edition compared to some members on here too. My thought is this: complete the album first (with the funds I can afford to burn) and upgrade later. I am enjoying the thrill of the hunt, but it is disappointing and intimidating reading some threads with single coins worth more than half my album. image Keep up the good work. You have some nice coins there!

Okay, I put the half dime carefully into the Dansco album and it looks super, ultra sweet.

It is obviously superior to the otherwise nice coins around it. Having a quality early piece really makes the 7070 collection look better.

Something about comparing coins side by side in an album is highly satisfying.

I might as well add the half dime photos to this thread. This coin really outshines everything around it. The luster around the stars shows through a slight tone. A very fine coin indeed! Attractive mid to high end circulated coins with luster and color are fairly ideal things in my opinion, now that I get to see one up close. And it's small, so you have to get close!!!

    image
    image

NOTE: Not to scale! It's small!

I'll whip out the super-macro lens on that filled-in 'F' on the reverse.

I am having a great deal of fun exploring all of the various kinds of coins for a 7070. So much to learn. So much I don't know.

I like the gold dollar - I love dirty denticles!
  • adamlaneusadamlaneus Posts: 6,969 ✭✭✭
Funny thing about the 1849 gold dollar with a little bit of dirt.

It came from an ANACS 50 'cleaned' slab! I guess they were mostly referring to the front of the coin, but even that has a patina on it.

I normally shy away from coins with damage designations. But in this case, I see nothing wrong that bothers me.

Yikes! I neglected to photograph my Large Cents...which, thanks to the board member 'rhedden'...the four types for the 7070 are now complete:

The key to photographing dark copper is to tell the camera to underexpose. It is supposed to be dark, not neutral gray. Most cameras need an adjustment for this.

For the 1803 coin, I took two obverse photographs. One with bottom lighting and one with top lighting to try and emphasize the 'unicorn'.

Lighting placement is critical with coins that have very low relief such as this one. It takes careful light placement to even see that horn coming out of her head. Also, the 1/100 on the reverse is very faint unless lit carefully.

    An 1831 large cent.

The reverse of this cent has an interesting light brown patina.

    Finally, an 1848 large cent:

An even more interesting red and caramel patina.
Some of these coins look very...edible!

That's all for the Large Cents in a Dansco 7070!

When I say 'economy', things are relative. You are looking at around $400 or so in large cents here. I could have paid more. Paying less would have probably gotten me a lesser quality. I am very happy with this right now.
