PCGS vs. NGC: makes sense to me (I think)
Excerpt from an eBay listing (for a 2008/07 reverse Eagle):
"WHY IS IT BETTER TO GET A PCGS MS69? IF YOU COMPARE THE POPULATION REPORTS FROM PCGS AND NGC, YOU WILL SEE THAT PCGS HAS GRADED LESS THAN 7% OF THESE COINS AS MS70. NGC HAS GRADED ABOUT 50% MS70 AND 50% MS69. SO, OVER 40% OF THE COINS THAT WOULD GRADE MS70 AT NGC END UP AT PCGS AS MS69'S. THEREFORE, YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING AN NGC MS70 QUALITY COIN AT AN MS69 PRICE."
If you accept the premise (underlined) at face value, that seems to explain the price differential between the two TPGs. Or can anyone think of a better reason?
Just FTR, I bought my NGC MS69's for an average $195, and PCGS MS69's for $240. The price was less important than acquiring some of these early on. Mighty glad I did.

I really don't know. I can identify characteristics of some coins in lower MS grades, but once you get to MS66, I leave it to the pros. Even with a loupe, MS69's look just fine to me, so they must see things I don't.

I didn't buy them for my collection, but I can turn them over for extra money to buy what I'd like to collect. Otherwise, my collecting days are at an end. Just ask my wife.
But for those who like moderns, hey, to each his own.

Given the information, i'd say buy all the PCGS 69's you can find and cross them over to NGC if you have a 50/50 shot. I see alot of money making potential if PCGS 69's sell for $240.
I have done that and won many times in a few series.

That was the price three months ago. Try more than double that now, for both labels.

Now you tell me
Scrap my original reply, guess I was 3 months late.
only to a collector do they thrash and turn in their sleep knowing there
is a microscopic imprefection that makes their coin less worthy then
the rest!
oi!

Not if you're selling they aren't!
The name is LEE!
<< <i>I'ved found MS64s more pleasing than many 65s and 66s, AU50s and AU58s more pleasing than MS60s-62, not hard to imagine finding a 69 just as pleasing as a 70. >>
Eye appeal (strike, luster, color, etc.) has always been a motivation for a collector to add a coin to their collection. But some people are motivated by the numbers game. For them, a higher number is where it's at, and the coin inside is merely an accessory. And now, they've added stars and stickers, while the coin inside remains unchanged.
I was opposed to plastic back in the 80's, but selling raw US coins doesn't work so well any more. Lee has it correct, when he replied to the question arent they all the same? by writing Not if you're selling they aren't!.
