  • Do you mean Newcomb numbers?? If so, The cents of 1816-1857 are assigned Newcomb numbers for each date to designate the known varieties for each year. The Cent Book by John Wright or the Noyes (Bill) book on Middle Dates are great attribution guides for the Middle dates 1816-1839. and The late date attribution guide published by Bob Grellman takes the series the rest of the way through 1857. These guides illustrate and describe the diagnostics of each variety and will assist you in identifying vthe various varieties. There may be one, but I'm not aware of any site that will illustrate or describe each variety in any detail.

Do not apologize for newbie questions!! Odds are for every question you ask someone else sees the answer and follows the link/reference and learns something themselves. That is what the board is for, keep it up!

  • Thank you very much for all the answers, much appreciated. Looks like a trip to the book store is in order. Thanks again.
  • The EACS site is a good introduction to the early copper collecting community - especially if you have an interest in the early coppers and want to learn a bit more. Check out the numismatic booksellers/auction sites and ebay for the attribution guides. Charles Davis, Abe books, and Fred Lake usually have these references for sale or offered in auction. Several of the numismatic suppliers may also have copies for sale. You won't find these at your average bookseller, so check the the specialist dealers or the authors.
