Can you post a big pick of the ff card? I don't remember the error at all. Been many years since I have seen the pic.

And yes I will rob him for ya.

Were these sold at auction when Fleer went out of business or did these walk out the back door? Any speculation?

  • << <i>Were these sold at auction when Fleer went out of business or did these walk out the back door? Any speculation? >>

I'm unsure and already emailed him that question. If he responds I'll let ya know.

Amazing - $150K opening bid, and if someone actually bites, he still has to pay $50 shipping.
  • If someone wants to go in and split this lot LMK. I want the Blue/white one. I'll cover the shipping.

Whats funny is my "white" one was my 1st FF version owned. Bought it in a GEM 10 holder and paid like $20

That's an amazing piece there... I'd totally wait him out until he just says screw it and posts it low with no reserve. You're the only person I know who deserves to own that piece.

It's funny, still to this day I always stare at the clock when it reads 6:16. It's kind of a lucky number for me now! I'll stare at the clock until it turns 6:17 (which was Cal's card number in that set). Good times... lol

I'm surprised that he doesn't have a "best offer" option.

  • Amazing. And yes, I'm down for robbin'

  • Ok so I just knocked over a .99 only store and robbed my kids piggybanks. I now have $39.00. Maybe the .99 only stores wasnt my best option.

Ok 6 of you say your the seller on my poll. I need you to prove your him. Post a pic of the blue/white one ( my favorite) next to a 3x5 card with the address of the cards location to prove you are really him.

Thats my plan. I just opened 23 new ebay accounts and I'm making offers of $100 so my real offer will sound BIG !!!

On another note, I cant be too bummed about not owning this. Recently I spent $400 on a cello that has a version on the back. I've only seen one other, mentioned in a error book once and have a copy of a email from Fleer stating it's existance. Not sure how I can reveal it's variation as it can be easily forged. It's not the saw cuts or the white out. If you know what I'm talking about PLEASE dont mention it. I have 2 buddies who need it and dont want scammers making them. If you know what I'm talking about PM/email me to discuss.

I have a cello with the white out version on front (in fact for many years it was the only white out version I owned and I even considered busting the pack just to get the card out)

Your sure it's not a white scribble? Can you see the WO thru the O in logo? Did you buy it or pull it from a box?

This is a huge find as some say the WO was never made by Fleer.

I have no proof this card was made avail. thru packs. Aside from buying one of each card I also am trying to get one of each on packs to help provide proof. Mainly on rack as they are harder to tamper with but on cello my only option.

Is it possible, where the WO is visible to get a close up scan of it?

Unless your the one who emailed me about one awhile back with one for sale but never came to terms and mentioned shopping it around at the National, this is only the second cello with a WO I have heard of. Other guy never provided a pic.

straight from a box back in '89; i'll pull it out and see if I can generate a scan where you can see it (hiden partially by the cellophane printing) .

Mine was never offered for sale; I was happy to pull it, as I was (still am) collecting unopened material with the FF card showing (all versions) thinking that it would be anytime soon where I'd get a "loose" white out card.....It took me nearly 10 years to find that genuine "loose" white out card (thats why I nearly busted it out of the cello for my binder).

Ahh. Thats the White Scribble. Still rare as thats the only WS I have seen on a cello. Thanks for the pic !!

Here's my whiteout. The whiteout "blobs" vary in size and can be easily faked.

Never cool knowing that something you'd love to have is so outrageously out of reach.

For some reason I picked up the latest Beckett. I guess I wanted to see how their version of the Tuff Stuff format looks. In any case, they had an article on the '89 Fleer Ripken. Have you seen it?

here is the same version in the pack that is obstructed with the cellophane printing (are you sure any of those 'white blob/flash' cards are legit?..I'd like to see them under light)...

Is it the one with Pujols on the cover? Article in in the readers write section with a few pics of bat knobs? If so yeah I saw it, a guy I know wrote them.
If its a different one. Off to the card shop I go.

Yeah, definately not cool seeing cards I want and it's almost as much as a house. image

Ironmanfan- I'll PM shortly about the whiteout. There's a few tell-tale signs on real vs. fake.

I asked the seller a ? and now the price is up to $175,000 !!!!!!!

Never said I will reveal it. I cant. I wont. And nothing can stop forgeries of this card. It was a version made very stupidly. I want to show all the variations but dont it to cause fakes to pop up. But yeah, eventually it will probally get out. So far though for 19 years it has eluded most and when it is revealed I'll call the time it wasnt "The good 'ole days".

I was saying, I dont want to say I'm looking for xxxxxx as they will most likely end up with one someone just made.

Seller said "Cards directly from Fleer."

Also there is some White Scribbles" that are in PSA holders that say Whiteout on the flip. I think I have seen 2. Pretty sure I have the pics saved.

Donovan, I love your threads about this crazy card. The dedication is really impressive.

That said, I *really* want you to just show us what you've got. I'd also love to read an article explaining the variations and how you've come to identify and locate them.

I understand why you're keeping the information secret, but how about just one little post?

    With lots of pictures.

    And descriptions.

    Please?

    (seriously...WE WANT TO KNOW!!!)

I agree with Will clark dude!!! I was 13 in 1989, and obviously I thought was pretty damn interesting. I opened two boxes of fleer when they first came out and pulled two of the original FF cards. I opened a box later that year and pulled a black box, which I think was the most common version.

I also enjoy reading your stuff about this card, and would love to learn more about all the versions. Hook us up!!!

  • Sure. I'll post what I can and have lots of pics. Currently I'm working 80+ hours a week so give me a little time and need to get pics from disk to my bucket etc.. and will get on it and post a nice little FF thread. I'll hopefully start on it today from work with what I have at hand.

  • Long before the controversy over this card swirled, Billy Riken was playing for the minor league team in my town. I got my hands on one of his game used (cracked) bats and had him sign it.

I wonder if he would sign anything like that today? Sometimes I wonder if I should "alter" the knob on the one I have or not. It would certainly make for a great conversation piece.
  • IronmanfanIronmanfan Posts: 5,525 ✭✭✭✭

I've always wondered what his take on all that is. So he'll sign the FF cards?? Will he sign them "Billy Ripken - F**k Face" if you ask him??
  • IronmanfanIronmanfan Posts: 5,525 ✭✭✭✭
I'll be one of the official scorers at the upcoming Ripken World Series and will be with Billy R. all that week if anyone has anything they want signed (all I ask is that you provide return postage).

yeah, those are the same card.

Which version was included in factory sets?? Black box, right?
  • PSA 7 is a lite loop Black Scribble ( if you look on the left side of the knob you'll see a faint C like a loop. There is also a Loop version where it is fully visable.

PSA 10 is a F showing Black Scribble

Not "official" names as I think we came up with the lite loop one.

Both not rare, but the lite loop is the rarer of the 2.
    imageimageimage
  • Ok thank you I posted this just in case you wanted to buy them before I put them on ebay. Should I mention the difference between the two to increase the rarer one's value or just say they are both scribble variations? Thanks

  • << <i>yeah, those are the same card.

Pretty much correct on the sets. Only assumed, but since the factory sets were packaged at the end of the run when the Black Box was around it's a safe assumption. Occasionally I read sellers state you can get any version but once I inquire they say that's what they thought. Never have pulled a different one. I think I have heard once that someone said they pulled a non BBox from a factory set. It's possible. Fleer didnt seem the most organized in '89 and I, along with others have pulled multiple versions from pack cases, leading me to believe they printed and then cut the sheets when necessary, which would also explain the numerous variations that were saw cut (most likely done to "clean up" once they had the Black Box as the final answer).

  • << <i>Ok thank you I posted this just in case you wanted to buy them before I put them on ebay. Should I mention the difference between the two to increase the rarer one's value or just say they are both scribble variations? Thanks >>

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass. I do have them both and try to upgrade the ones I have but I have the F version in a pretty high grade (honestly I cannot remember what grade. It's either a 9.5 or 1st graded which one or the other is sufficent for me) and plus I'm already trying to scrounge up $175,000 image

I would definately mention the variation.

    A. It will educate unknowing collectors who just browse at the auction. Possibly creating more FF version collectors. I used to think the more I mention it, the more competition I'll have. True. But the more competition, prices raise and maybe cause people to pull their versions from their closets and then have the more rare and unconfirmed versions to surface.

    B. Someone who might pass on it say "oh I though I had the scribble, that ones different" and then bid.

    imageimageimage
  • ok thanks a lot
  • Good Luck.

Feel free the mention the website www.billripken.com in the auction if you like. Since it pertains to the FF card it's allowed.
    imageimageimage
  • haha I remembered to do that first thing when I was listing it don't worry. Thanks again
  • No problem. I enjoy talking about the FF and honestly the wife is tired of hearing about it. You know what that means. New wife time.
