How many folks put a "low" bid on an expensive coin...

...just because they feel like their making their mark in history? For instance, if one were to place a $1,000,000 bid on a Class I 1804 dollar, despite possibly not having a million bucks to their name, they would certainly be outbid. But it would still be cool to say, "I placed a million dollar bid on an 1804 dollar." Does anyone here ever do this?

Million dollar coins are too far out of my league to even think about.

I often put in a fairly low bid on an ebay item just to move it into my "bidding" group to make it easier to follow. I save my "real" bidding for the end of the auction, as do many other buyers.

I wonder if its even legal to bid knowing you don't have the funds to cover.

I did something like this in the stock market once and got a real interesting letter in the mail. I bought and sold before the settlement date .

I admit I was high bidder of a recent sale of a 1909 VDB Matte Proof Lincoln. My high bid of $10,000 held for about a day, and I can officially say I was an underbidder after it hammered for almost $70,000.

Don't even think about playing in the million dollar league. But I like to low ball some nice things on eBay to watch what they go for. Have been able to get a few for less than price list by watching a lot of them.

I like to bid on eBay on a nice one to keep it on auction. These days they remove to GOOD ones ALL the time. Buy it now offers instead of keeping them listed. Bidding more $ than I could pay is not a journey I'd gamble on personally. JMO!
