Why crack it when you can get a nice BU example raw (and good enough for the album) for $10-$20?

I'm inclined to agree here even tho the thing was unholdered for at least 20 years or so during its formative years. You do have the advantage of a measure of physical protection and a pretty decent opinion with the thing in the slab.

I crack out coins to put in albums all the time -- but usually circulated coins that have developed a "circulation skin" that protects it from the elements while raw. I wouldn't do it with an MS-65 rattler that looked like this. It takes very little to damage a coin in this condition as opposed to (say) a typical VF Walker.

If it's a rattler it may continue to tone in the holder, leave it alone and let it age!

Coins should never ever be cracked out of holders. In fact, we should encapsulate EVERY coin we can get our hands on.

Well they have most famous paintings worth gazillions wrapped in a hard plastic shell don't they?
They also keep most old vintage cars in a plastic tomb also don't they?
    How about Ming vases?
    Rare earth magnets?
    Shrunken heads?

Oh man....does that mean I am going to have to send in all my old marbles from my youth to be forever individually slabbed???
    Wait
The JRocco Marble Collection or the JMC marble hoard for shortimage
Might not be a bad idea after all.....

Hey....we have something in common Becoka ....I collect empty plastic bags I get from the supermarket.
All the different adds they print on them...some have blue ink and some have black ink... Fascinating stuff.

I guess you're working on a killer album, Stef. That's a real nice example for it. image

Don't crack it. If you need the date for your album, buy a raw piece.

Why crack it? That plastic is worth quite a few dollars (to the value of the item).

Personally, I draw the line at cracking coins in this high a grade. That being said, I cracked a nicely toned MS62 1890-s Morgan for my toned date set collection... but these aare fairly common. I've cracked a number of coins and kept mainly the key dates and coins I planned on flipping encapsulated.

In this particular case, I think there are enough lower end MS Franklins out there that are suitable for albums...IMHO...

Don't crack it out. Some people collect coins just to get the old holder. Buy another raw one, imo.
