  I actually opened a mint sealed bag of Peace Jefferson nickels recently. There was some nice toning on a lot of them and the bag is only a few years old.

  I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

  I put a unopened roll of state quarters in a walnut wood box for about five years and the end coin turned dark purple. I was really surprised to see a copper-nickle coin tone so much.
  
  If by "old coins" you mean 90% silver - they tone much easier.
  I think they put nickel in stainless steel. So you really have to work to tone copper nickel.
