I agree wholeheartedly that most buyers shy away from auctions that do not accept Paypal. I am one of them on 99% of all of my purchases. However, if I have been looking for a certain item for a while, or it is a special situation, I will not hesitate to bid if they do not accept Paypal. I think my Mantle card would fit this category. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Here is an analogy. It may be a poor one, but I think it makes sense. We all go to Walmart and get everyday items. We have also bought cars. Which is more of a hassle - buying toothpaste at Walmart or purchasing a vehicle? Obviously, it is more of a hassle to purchase a vehicle. If buying toothpaste at Walmart meant going through a big hassle like purchasing a car, we would all shop for our toothpaste somewhere else. However, we don't hesitate to go through the hassle to purchase a car. Did that make sense? I guess, my opinion (although shaky) is that you don't find an affordable 52 Mantle everyday. It's not like buyers will be able to find one of these like they would be able to find a 1975 Topps George Brett rookie. This is how my thinking is leaning. Try talking me out of it. I welcome it.

If all/most buyer did not bid on auctions that do not accept PayPal then the auctions would not sell for fair market value. I know this by looking at the bid history and the cashier's check I get for my high end items.

I have found that I have lost little to nothing (and even made a higher profit when you consider Paypal fees) on truly high end items when I do not accept Paypal. While it is true that many buyers are reluctant to bid if Paypal is not accepted, there are many others that don't mind at all and will bid strongly for an item they want. Just look at ebay seller JustCollect's realized prices for proof of that on a larger scale.

It depends on who the seller is.

Is it some top shelf seller? or some slime ball?

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • So what is going to happen when Ebay makes all sellers take Paypal? That day is coming. All the auction houses are going to fill up with stuff and sellers will be back to paying 10 to 20% fees.

To me a seller who does not take Paypal is not doing so for a reason, most likely they are not confident about the item they are selling. Most sellers on Ebay that do not take Paypal at all are doing so for a reason and its not a good one.

Actually, that is no longer true, at least not in the forseeable future. See storm's thread from last night regarding ebay's decision on the topic.

If anyone is becoming a good enough card dealer, then just apply to directly take credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express...basically you're gonna have to have a decent personal credit history and there shouldn't be a problem opening a merchant account. Then you don't have to worry about confirmed addresses and all the PayPal BS...the merchant card processing company can explain it all to you.

Leiascards- You are running out of excuses. I think we have covered most everything in the 2 or 3 threads on the topic. I would not accept paypal simply for the fact it would mean that you would not bid on my auction.

    No.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

<< <i>A card like that it is very doubtful you will run into a scamming buyer. Buyers of vintage cards are not likely candidates to scam a seller. >>

Do you actually believe the garbage you type?image

I have only read the first 1.5 pages of this thread and you're opinion is dead wrong on this and on the paypal issue. If a buyer wants to screw you they can and they will. As Grote says, it's been documented Numerous times in the coin forum and whether they are coins or cards makes no difference....it can happen.

In all honesty if you're pricing that card at between $3000 and $4000 the only kind of buyer you'll likely attract will be a scammer because he knows he's getting it for free. It's not a $3000 to $4000 card. While you got a good deal on the card, tossing it in a PSA authentic slab doesn't suddenly add thousands in value to the card. At what you paid for it it's worth investing money into restoration. At $4000 you're asking post-restoration value.

    GREAT DECISION!

too much unknown risk the other way
  • "So what is going to happen when Ebay makes all sellers take Paypal? That day is coming"

    I think not.
  • What happens when you accept a cashiers check 10 days later it clears and then 5 days later it ends up that it did not clear due to being a fake. You have already shipped the item. It can take up to 30 days for a check to truly clear a bank, but under most laws a bank cannot hold the funds for more than 7-10 days. If this scenario happens do you think the bank is not going to want their money back by removing it from your account. This scenario has happened before several times, while rare it can and does happen if a scammer is going to get you they will try no matter what form of payment you take.

I guess everyone believes everything they read to when there is a problem humans tend to leave out the details of where they could have created the problem themselves. As far as coins go at one point coins were not considered items that could even be sold with Paypal.

If you read 99.9% of all problems with Paypal are the SELLERS fault. I sold my 2001 Bowman Chrome Pujols rookie a couple of years ago through Paypal for around 1700.00 and did not have a problem. I sold a CGC 9.4 Hulk 181 on consignment with Paypal and did not have a problem. I sold a PS3 the first year they were out for 1800 and did not have a problem. I have never had a problem with Paypal on high dollar items.

I did have a buyer file a fraudlent use of a CC for a 376.00 item through Paypal once. Only one over 100.00 I have ever had all others have been for alot less. Paypal put a hold I provided all the info to Paypal 10 days later they took the money saying they had lost the dispute 2 days later they refunded it saying that since I had all the documentation that they required they were covering the chargeback through the SPP.

My take on Paypal comes from my own experiences not some crap I have read online where the seller leaves out facts of the case.

What is going to happen when Ebay requires ALL sellers to take Paypal?

I think so, they already require sellers who registered in the middle of 2006 or later to take Paypal. The thing in Australia was just them trying to mandate Paypal ONLY.. The direction they are pointing indicates that day is coming soon.
