Has anyone noticed that NGC now requires membership to access the Census Report?

numismanumisma Posts: 3,877 ✭✭✭✭

I used the Census Report last night, then this morning when I tried to access the data it asked for a password. Took just a minute to set-up an account (my NGC forum account wasn't enough), so no big deal. They also changed the format a bit.

as far as i know you've always needed to be a member of "Collectors Society" to access the pop report and i have always had to log in with an e-mail address and password.

At least it doesn't cost anything to get an account image

I have never had to login until today. Last night it said "Census." Today it reads "Census & Price Guide." No big deal. For a second I thought I was losing my mind or something.

Good point. PCGS charges for the information. Of course the usefulness of the data pays for itself.
  • It's new. This was posted on the NGC boards a while ago:

Several areas of the CCG websites now require a login and password. If you are an Authorized Dealer or a Collectors Society member, you can use your preexisting login for immediate and FULL site access. If you do not have an account, create a Pass Key account. A Pass Key for this site is free and gives you access to many its features. Simply click on the “Interested in Joining?” link found at the login area on the left to complete a brief new member form.

These changes were made to accommodate a series of new and upcoming website features, including member home pages, expanded site content, improved email list management features, and much more! All of these tools will help to keep you better informed about new services as they come online. We’re committed to enhancing your experience as a collector by providing you with industry leading tools and information.

Also, if you always use the same computer, take advantage of the Remember Me feature when you login. This will keep you logged in so that whenever you visit this site, you can proceed directly to password protected features without logging in.

Aw. This is a shame. I checked in fairly regularly to see the changes.

  • looks like membership is free anyways, so no biggie. I use this along with heritage's numbers posted on various auctions... though I may just end up joining the PCGS for a year to submit some stuff.

Hopefully they don't require an "isp" email address. Otherwise, like their boards, I'll never end up joining to access their census either. Won't be hassled setting up an ISP email when my gmail is my primary email provider.
  • Has anyone had trouble trying to view the Census Report today? It won't let me after I login. image
    Thanks,

That's why I started this thread. I can tell you that the login/password that you use for the NGC forum will NOT work for the Census Report. You have to sign up for a separate account.
  • I am using my Collector's Society account.

I can't log in either so you're not alone. Keep getting an invalid password message.

I got in with my Collector's Society login, but I have registry sets there as well. I wonder if that could explain why some can get in and some can't with the existing login.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

It is not about PCGS vs. NGC or anything of that sort. This is just data than can be used in consideration with other data to help determine relative rarities, grade distributions, etc.
  • Also, they have added the NCS order look-up to the Collector's society website for looking up submission status. This is a feature that I like.

Not that PCGS' pop reports are so great, but in the areas in which I collect, NGC's pop reports are not worth considering for a myriad of reasons. It's probably been at least six months since I have looked at them. I access PCGS pop reports, on average, once or twice each week.

I prefer the PCGS pop data to NGC as well. Unfortunately, NGC got off on some wild tangents years ago and now certain series can be difficult to interpret. Still, I find it useful for other series, but I use take the information with a grain of salt.

I tried accessing the NGC census using all the old password information I could find. Nothing works for me.

Anyone with a Mac able to access the NGC census? I called today, all my information was correct, but still unable to access the census. NGC is looking into the problem.

I have a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard. Using the Safari web browser, I am able to access the census. It was not working earlier for me, but now it is. It seemed like an internal NGC problem and not Mac.

I set up another account and still kept getting the message "invalid password". I finally figured out I needed to use my email address instead of my login name, after that no problem with seeing the NGC census.

Moosesr, you solved my problem. I used my email address, and my Collector's Society password, and it worked! Sign in for the CS forum uses different information to sign in, including a separate password.

It is too bad that PCGS doesn't follow suit. It always seemed rather silly to charge for this information.
