Is there any premium on 1896-o VAM-19 (old 1A)

moosesrmoosesr Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭
The 1896-o VAM-19 coin is on the VAM Hit List 40 and listed as an I5 R5, can someone tell me if there is any premium on this coin? I found an AU one in an NGC holder and wondered if it would be worth crossing over to PCGS.

Thanks,
Charlie

I am sure there will be a premium and should be now. Perhaps no recent trades have occurred.

I would suggest crossing it. I picked up an NGC 63 one not long ago and crossed it to PCGS 62. Now it is just waiting for a reference for the hit list to come out and PCGS to start attributing them subsequent to that.

The only other one I have personally found was an AU. Got holdered by ANACS as AU details a couple years ago. Not sure how many are out there. Since it is a die pair and not a late state or something like that, they shouldn't be particularly rare, especially as AU sliders for that date. But you never know how long those dies were in the press or if the lion's share ended up in one melt or another.

I have an AU that I found a few years ago. It should have a premium, but I don't think the amount has been established yet, as this has been one of the "under the radar" varieties, even though it is very dramatic and been known for quite a while. IIRC, Bill Fivaz first reported it in 1973. In his Encyclopædia, Breen proposed that it was a possible 1896/4. In 2002ish, I made an overlay of the date out of VAM book pictures and sent them to Leroy, then went to a local show that weekend looking for that coin and found a nice AU in about 20 minutes and sent that to him.

PCGS does list it in the POP report with a total of 11 graded:

Yes, it is among the couple dozen VAMs they added to the service, prior to talk of the hit list, because they were popular, premium bearing and easy to attribute.

(....and mine is among those in the attributed population.)

Sold one for a modest premium in ANACS AU50 years ago. Saw an unattributed NGC MS61 at auction, but I passed out of the very strong possibility it would go AU58 at PCGS .

Bottom line, real good vam to own, but not worth the cherrypick above AU (no market for it in MS).
